About our thermal roof survey in Aston
A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp isn’t obvious. Water can travel some distance under a roof covering before it shows inside, and the camera can show patterns that help us follow it. We combine the images with a visual inspection and moisture readings, so the findings do not rely on the camera alone. We are often asked to look into moisture around outlets and upstands and cold spots on ceilings under the roof, on flat roofs, pitched roof slopes and loft conversions.
Older buildings in small places like Aston may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Flying and imaging in Aston
If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Aston is part of Stevenage, one of the post-war new towns. Homes from the post-war decades are common in the new towns, many with low-pitched roofs in concrete tiles and flat-roofed garages or porches. Low pitches and flat-roofed additions are hard to see from the ground, so aerial and thermal views add detail.
Anyone responsible for a site like Aston St Mary's Church of England Aided Primary School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. The streets around a church such as Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image. Aston Bury lies about 0.7 miles south, so building around Aston goes back a long way. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

Aston questions
Do you cover Aston?
Yes, Aston is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just ring 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the property, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
Is Aston within the area you cover?
Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.
Will you go up on the roof?
Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
How much does a thermal roof survey cost?
Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. The Premium Survey also covers a full inspection, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a report on the same day.
Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?
The camera can point to heat loss and gaps in insulation. The survey isn’t an energy rating or a heat loss calculation, but the images show where improvements may help.
Can a thermal camera see water?
Thermal imaging shows temperature rather than water. Wet insulation holds heat longer than dry, so it can stand out, and moisture readings are used to check it.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.
What else we do in Aston
Why it’s worth a survey now in Aston
Thermal images can suggest the extent of wet areas without cutting into the roof. It helps when deciding whether to patch an area or replace the roof. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Aston, driving rain gets into any weakness, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.

How it works
A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. It typically takes between one and two hours for most houses, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. For a village or hamlet like Aston, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- You let us know about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
- The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.
Before the survey
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent

- A formal energy assessment
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface

Checking the roof from ground level
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
