Thermal roof surveys in Camden Town: local notes
Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Within a mile and a half or so of Camden Town there are several hotels, and hotels, like offices and blocks of flats, often have flat roofs. For hotels and other commercial buildings, large roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.
If you look after a building such as Our Lady Roman Catholic Primary School, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once. The streets around a church such as St Michael's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
Camden Town is about 2 miles north of City of Westminster, in Greater London. We visit Camden Town as part of our work across Greater London, for houses, flats and commercial buildings. Camden Town is one of the towns and villages in Greater London we cover.
We work across the NW1, N1C, NW5 and NW3 postcode area for thermal roof surveys. We offer thermal roof surveys to properties on Camden High Street, Greenland Road and Camden Road. Being close to the A400 and B512, Camden Town is simple for us to get to for thermal roof surveys. How a thermal roof survey works in Camden Town
A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp is not obvious. Leaks often run along a roof before they appear on a ceiling, and temperature patterns can help us trace where it may have come from. We combine the images with a visual inspection and moisture readings, so no conclusion rests on one method alone. If you’ve noticed ceilings that feel colder in places and possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
London’s roofs are frequently hard to see from the street: butterfly roofs behind parapets, dormer tops and flat roofs over back additions. Drone photos and thermal images can show parts of a roof that are hard to reach safely. Weather on the day decides whether it goes ahead, in Camden Town as anywhere. Thermal images show surface temperature, not water itself, so findings are checked with moisture readings.
If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Can I check my roof myself?
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.
What we’re asked to look at in Camden Town
Building owners and managing agents use thermal surveys to plan work on larger flat roofs. Patterns can point to wet areas and show which parts look sound, so we know where to take moisture readings.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Cold areas below the roof
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
- Leaks that are hard to trace
- Damp patches with no obvious cause
For businesses in and around places such as Brunswick Centre, large commercial roofs are often easiest to see from above or with a thermal imager.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
- Their report turnaround times
- Are they insured for the work?
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
Tips from our surveys
Getting the most from a thermal roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:
- Make sure the loft can be reached safely
- Heat the home normally on the days before
- Photograph damp patches with the date
- Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
Buyers can use the findings when talking to the seller or agent. It is your decision how to use it, whether that is asking for work or discussing the price.
Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.
What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys
To price your survey, we check:
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- Basic, Standard or Premium
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
Getting in touch
What helps most when you contact us:
- The address and postcode of the property
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
- Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
If you are buying, it helps to book soon after your offer is accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. For any other survey, just ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email when you are ready.
How the survey works
The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. All told, expect an hour or two at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. In converted houses and mansion blocks, the loft hatch is often on a shared landing. If that applies to your building, it helps to agree access with the neighbours or the managing agent first. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.
- First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
- We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
- Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
- You get a report with thermal images, photos and our recommendations.
Before the survey
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent

Camden Town questions
Are there drone restrictions around Camden Town?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying, though the rest of the survey goes ahead either way.
Is my home in Camden Town listed or in a conservation area?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
How long will you be at the property?
It typically takes an hour or two for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. We will confirm the timing when booking.
Does the weather affect a thermal survey?
Conditions on the day have a big effect on what the camera can show. Dry, calm weather after some sun gives the best chance of clear images. We record the conditions in the report, so you know how much weight to give the images.
What’s the best way to book?
To arrange a survey, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us the address and what you need to know. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.
What can thermal imaging tell me about my roof?
The images show how warm or cool each part of the surface is. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, and we check them with moisture readings.
What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
- Insulation values or heat loss calculations
- A structural engineer’s assessment
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. What our survey covers.
