Roof survey in NW1: how it works

Our roof surveys cover NW1 and the wider South East. Visits run on weekdays and at weekends. We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance. Each survey ends with a written report, emailed with photos and recommendations. Houses, flats and commercial buildings all follow the same careful process. When you’re ready to book, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email. We survey clay and concrete tiles, flat roofs and ridges, hips and valleys, and the problems we are asked to look at most are worn or blocked valleys and loose chimney pots.

We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. Most surveys take about 1–2 hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys.

  1. You let us know the address, the type of roof and what’s worrying you.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends if that suits you.
  3. Outside, we inspect from ground level, windows and other safe vantage points, and from the roof where safe.
  4. Inside, we check the loft space where there’s safe access.
  5. You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.

Landmarks near Camden Town

We work in homes and buildings around Our Lady Roman Catholic Primary School, The Camden School for Girls and North Bridge House School. Also close by are Vaughan Williams Memorial Library (less than half a mile west), St Michael's Church (less than half a mile west), The Camden Eye pub (under half a mile south-west) and Lewis Cubitt Park (0.7 miles east). Camden Town has its own railway station: Camden Road station. Well-known places in the area include St Pancras Hospital (0.5 miles south-east) and Montfichet's Tower (2.5 miles south-east). The countryside around Camden Town includes St. James's Park Lake and Adelaide Nature Reserve.

Homes and roofs across NW1

Across NW1, plenty of older houses still have chimney stacks, used or not, and their flashings and pointing need checking like any other part of the roof. Valleys, gutters and fixings follow close behind.

The South East’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around several of its airports, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any drone flight in NW1. Where permission is needed, the flight waits for it.

Camden Town: If you live in an older home near St Michael's Church, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine. If you own a rental within reach of Camden Road station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.

Different roofs, different checks

Concrete interlocking tiles

Ridge and verge mortar on concrete tile roofs can crack and fall away. We check for loose ridge tiles and missing mortar.

Flat roof coverings

Standing water, blisters and splits all point to wear. We also look at the edges, upstands and outlets, since leaks often start there.

Practical tips

A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • Find records of any re-roofing or repairs
  • Mention any damp patches when booking
  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Include dormers, porches and garages when you book

File the report with your other home documents. It gives you something to compare against later, and it can help when you sell.

After a storm, check the roof from the garden and the street. Fragments of slate or tile on the ground mean something has shifted. Getting small faults fixed quickly keeps water out.

Common roof problems in NW1

A chimney stack takes more weather than almost any other part of a roof. Pointing erodes, flaunching cracks and pots work loose. Water that gets into a stack can show up as damp in the rooms below.

Here are some of the things we see often:

  • Worn or blocked valleys
  • Torn or sagging underlay
  • Standing water on a flat roof
  • Leaning or weathered chimney stacks

What a survey costs

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • Whether it’s a home or a commercial building

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Prices start from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

Helping us price your survey

If you can, have these to hand when you contact us:

  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is

Leave it or get it looked at?

A roof that has had no attention for years can surprise you. A survey sets a baseline, so you can compare it next time.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
  • Whether the loft is part of the inspection
  • Will the report include photos?

NW1 questions

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with the building owner or managing agent. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the survey around it.

Do you inspect the roof from on top?

Where it’s safe, yes. Much of the survey is done from ground level, upper windows and the roof space. The Premium Survey adds a drone where applicable.

What’s covered in a roof inspection?

Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all checked, plus the roof space where there is safe access. The report includes photos and recommendations.

Can you survey in bad weather?

Light rain is usually fine; heavy rain and wind are different. In strong wind or a downpour, a drone can’t fly and access may not be safe, and we’d agree another day.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

When will the report arrive?

Premium reports arrive the same day, Standard within 24 to 48 hours and Basic within 48 hours. Each report includes photos.

What’s the best way to book?

Simply ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.
