Thermal roof survey in Hill Grove

What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. It helps to have a sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air. Rain, a strong wind or heavy cloud can make the images less clear. We will discuss the weather with you when booking, and our report notes the conditions and how they affected what we saw. If you’re worried about cold areas below the roof and damp around roof outlets and upstands, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

Some older homes in villages like Hill Grove are listed or in a conservation area. A look from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

How it works

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes about one to two hours for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Cottages and farmhouses around Hill Grove often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen.

  1. We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can be seen safely.
  3. A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
  4. Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
  5. You get a report with thermal images, photographs and our recommendations.

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Hill Grove

How do I find out if my home in Hill Grove is listed?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Hill Grove?

Yes. We work right across London and South East England, and Hill Grove is part of that. You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and some details.

Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?

Thermal images can suggest where heat is escaping and where insulation may be missing. The survey isn’t an energy rating or a heat loss calculation, but the report shows where to look more closely.

Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?

On pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp patterns. We explain what the images can and can’t tell you, and back them up with a visual inspection and moisture readings.

What happens next?

The report arrives by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and details are available on request.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We carry out surveys on any day of the week. To arrange a date, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

What we look for on each type of roof

Pitched slate and tile roofs

On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s happening underneath. We back up what the camera shows with a look in the loft where we can.

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Damp at junctions can be hard to see by eye. We combine a close visual check with the thermal images.

What we can’t see

Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:

  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations
  • Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
  • Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll recommend the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Commercial roofs
  • Loft conversions
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Ceilings below the roof

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Hill Grove?

Some owners book because the rooms under the roof feel cold. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated roof areas can show up on the camera, particularly when there is a clear difference between inside and outside.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Damp patches with no obvious cause
  • Heat escaping through the roof
  • Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
  • Gaps in loft insulation

If you live in an older home near Church of St Barnabas, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • What follow-up you get after the report
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • What insurance they carry
  • When you’ll get the report

What a good roof survey covers

What a survey costs

Not every roof costs the same to survey, and it comes down to:

  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • House, block, shop or office
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • How big the roof is

Prices start from £400, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, with VAT included.

What we need to know

Getting the details right at the start saves time. It’s useful to include:

  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • Dates you are working to, like exchange
  • The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel

We survey roofs on any day of the week. To find a date that works for you, call 07833 053749 or email us with the address and the days you’d prefer.

What a thermal roof survey looks like in Hill Grove

A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it’s listed or in a conservation area. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area.

If you look after a building such as Swanmore Church of England Aided Primary School, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Once insulation under a membrane is wet, it tends to stay wet. In time, it stops insulating properly and can damage the deck. Finding them early can mean a smaller job. For older village homes like those around Hill Grove, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
