Tips from our surveys

Small things make a difference. Some pointers:

  • Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
  • Note where damp appears and after what weather
  • Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
  • Use the report as a baseline for later checks

Many people send the report to roofers, who can then quote for the areas shown. Because the images are paired with photos, it’s easy to find each area on the roof.

Consider a repeat survey after major work on the roof in suitable weather.

How a thermal roof survey works in Rookley

Thermal imaging is part of our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. It also includes a drone inspection where applicable, a structural analysis and a same-day report. There’s an in-person consultation as well, plus a follow-up 12 months later. You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and a note of what you’ve noticed. For big commercial roofs, we quote on size and access. We survey pitched roof slopes, flat roofs and loft conversions, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions and wet insulation beneath the membrane.

Villages like Rookley frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

How the survey changes by roof type

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

Felt and asphalt roofs often show wet areas as patches that differ from the rest. Moisture readings are used to check them.

Loft insulation

Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. Thermal images can show where it has been pushed aside.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, including offices, shops and units. Larger roofs take longer, and they’re priced for the size.

We survey roofs for landlords and letting agents as well as householders. A written report with photographs gives you a clear record of the roof, which helps you plan work between tenancies.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

What this survey can’t tell you

No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Bear these in mind:

  • What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
  • Proving moisture from the images alone
  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.

Rookley questions

Is Rookley within the area you cover?

Yes, Rookley is covered. Our area covers London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

How do I find out if my home in Rookley is listed?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Surveys run seven days a week. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only if it’s safe. We look at everything that can safely be seen: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we can’t see is noted in the report.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We look at the parts we are given access to, and the report makes that clear.

Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?

On pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp patterns. We explain what the images can and can’t tell you, and we check them with a visual inspection and moisture readings.

Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?

Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. We look from the loft as well, where there is safe access.

Thermal roof surveys around Rookley

Rookley is within about 5 miles of the coast, and wind off the sea can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Thatch survives on some older Isle of Wight buildings, and sea air and wind reach every part of the island. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail.

Sheat Manor lies about 1 mile west, so building around Rookley goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey by drone or thermal camera does not touch the roof itself. For an older house near a landmark like St. Olave's Church, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. Take a building like Chillerton and Rookley Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Rookley is about 3 miles south of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. We provide thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Rookley and nearby. We cover towns and villages across the Isle of Wight, from the larger towns to small villages. For surveys nearby, see our Portsmouth page.

Thermal roof surveys in PO38 are booked the same way as anywhere else. Whether your property is on Manor Crescent, Niton Road and Main Road or anywhere close by, we can survey it. We also cover Rookley Green (1 mile south), Merstone (1 mile north-east), Blackwater (1 mile north), Godshill (2 miles south-east) and Sandford (2 miles south-east). Larger places within reach include Newport (3 miles north), Ryde (7 miles north-east), Cowes (7 miles north), Sandown (5 miles east), Shanklin (5 miles east) and Ventnor (5 miles south-east). For harder-to-reach addresses, a little more planning is needed, so mention it as you book.

What we do, step by step

There is not much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will take it from there. A typical survey takes about one to two hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Older roofs in small places like Rookley can have low, tight loft spaces, so it is useful to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
  3. Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Before we arrive

  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
