Stocker's Head: your questions answered
Is Stocker's Head within the area you cover?
Yes, we do. Our area covers London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
Is my home in Stocker's Head listed or in a conservation area?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. The report will say if you need an engineer.
How long does the survey take?
It normally takes about one to two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. We’ll confirm the timing when you book.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.
Does the report include photos?
Yes. Photos are part of every report.
Thermal roof survey in Stocker's Head
Thermal imaging is a useful tool, but it has limits. It shows surface temperature, and things like sun, shade, reflections and wind all affect the readings. We back up the images with moisture readings and a careful look at the roof. Our report says plainly what the camera picked up and how sure we can be. If a finding cannot be confirmed, the report suggests a next step. Typical surveys look at ceilings that feel colder in places and stains that keep coming back, across commercial roofs, loft conversions and flat roofs.
In a small place like Stocker's Head, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

Honest limits
Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:
- Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
- A structural engineer’s assessment

What we do, step by step
A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take an hour or two at most homes, or half a day or so for a commercial building. For a village or hamlet like Stocker's Head, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
Preparing for the visit
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Keep pets in another room
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
Booking a survey
A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will ask a few questions about the roof. You will have a price before anything is arranged.
Advice
What a thermal roof survey looks like in Stocker's Head
If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles hung on pegs through two holes, are typical of older Kent buildings. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.
Belmont House and Gardens, about 3.9 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Stocker's Head. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. Anyone responsible for a site like Charing Church of England Primary School will know that big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

Why get it checked now?
Without thermal imaging, the only way to see how far water has spread is often to open up the roof. It helps when deciding whether to patch an area or replace the roof. In a place like Stocker's Head, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Roof by roof
Loft insulation
In the loft space, the camera can pick up gaps and thin areas of insulation. We look where there’s safe access.
GRP fibreglass roofs
Water under a GRP roof can reach the timber deck. The camera can help show where to look.
Common roof problems in Stocker's Head
Some buyers want extra detail before they commit to a purchase. A Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where it applies and a same-day report, which helps when timescales are tight.
Typical things we’re asked to look at include:
- Leaks that are hard to trace
- Heat escaping through the roof
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
If you live in an older home near Church of St Peter and St Paul, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.
What to check before booking
- What insurance they carry
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
- What happens after the report arrives
