Thermal roof survey in Westhumble
What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. A sunny day before the survey, a dry roof surface and little wind all help. Rain, a strong wind or heavy cloud can make the images less clear. We talk through the forecast when you book, and the report explains how the conditions on the day affected the results. If you’re worried about ceilings that feel colder in places and patches of heat loss across the roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Villages like Westhumble frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What we cannot see
Every survey has limits, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and does not.
Roof types and parts we check
- Flat roofs
- Commercial roofs
- Insulated roof spaces
- Ceilings below the roof
- Pitched roof slopes
- Loft conversions
DIY checks: what’s safe
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date.
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Westhumble
Building owners and managing agents use thermal surveys to plan work on larger flat roofs. It can suggest which areas may be wet and which seem dry, so moisture readings can be targeted.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Stains that keep coming back
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
- Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
- Leaks far from where the stain appears
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as The Ashcombe School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

What else we do in Westhumble
Landlord and commercial surveys in Westhumble
Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, including offices, shops and units. Larger roofs take longer.
Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the survey around it.
What we do, step by step
We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Around Westhumble, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
- We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can safely be seen.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there is safe access.
- We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Check pets are kept safely away

Different roofs, different checks
Loft insulation
From inside the loft, thermal imaging can show gaps in insulation and cold spots. We inspect the loft where it can be reached safely.
GRP fibreglass roofs
GRP roofs are laid over timber boards, so trapped moisture can affect the deck. The camera can help show where to look.
Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Westhumble
Do you carry out roof surveys in Westhumble?
We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Westhumble?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Are you structural engineers?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs such as sagging are noted, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. The report will say if you need an engineer.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.
What’s the best way to book?
It is easiest to phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Give us the address and a few details about the roof, and we’ll point you to the right survey. Surveys run on any day of the week.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Yes, where it’s applicable. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Thermal roof surveys in Westhumble: local notes
Westhumble has a number of hotels within about a mile and a half, and like offices and blocks, hotels frequently sit under flat roofs. For hotels and other commercial buildings, large roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once. In Surrey, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, with tile-hanging on many upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail.
Polesden Lacey, about 1.8 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Westhumble. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof itself. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Church of St Michael, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.
