Chimney surveys for homes and businesses in Chale Green
A leaning chimney stack is worth having looked at. Stacks can lean when mortar on one side breaks down, often after years of flue gases and damp. The survey notes how the stack looks, how far it seems to lean and the state of the bricks and joints. Where it may be a structural concern, we will recommend a structural engineer. We are often asked to look into loose, cracked or missing pots and staining on walls around the chimney, on shared and party-wall stacks, flaunching and lead flashings.
Some older homes in villages like Chale Green are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.
The written findings come by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Checking the roof from the ground
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

When you need someone else
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- Checks on boilers, fires or their flues
- Hidden sides of a shared stack
- A structural engineer’s assessment
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will point you to the right survey. What our survey covers.
What we look at
- Brick chimney stacks
- Flaunching
- Lead flashings
- Chimney breasts
- Chimney pots and cowls
- Shared and party-wall stacks
For landlords and managing agents
Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the survey around it.
Letting agents can arrange access with tenants. Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which helps when tenants work during the week.
Why get it checked now?
A leaning stack should be looked at sooner rather than later. Our survey records it and says when a structural engineer should look at it, so you can decide what to do next. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Chale Green, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
There are three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Useful tips for Chale Green property owners
Small things make a difference. Our tips:
- Never climb onto the roof to look at a chimney
- Glance at the stacks from the street now and then
- Have brackets on the chimney checked
- File photos of the stacks with your home records
If the stack is shared, you can pass the report to your neighbour. It shows what we found and where from the viewpoints we used.
Get small mortar repairs done while they’re small. Small repairs now can save bigger work later.
Chimney surveys in Chale Green: local notes
The coast is about 2 miles or less from Chale Green, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof, while driving rain finds any gap. Historic houses such as Wolverton Manor, about 2.5 miles north-west, show how far back building in the area around Chale Green goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs.
The streets around a church like St. James' Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

Chale Green questions
Is Chale Green within the area you cover?
Yes. Chale Green is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.
Do roofs near the sea, like those around Chale Green, take more of a battering?
It can do. Within about 2 miles of the sea, as Chale Green is, metal fixings wear faster and gales find any loose ridge or slate.
What does a roof survey cost?
Prices start from £150, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all with VAT included.
Do you take photos of the roof?
Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and they go into the written report.
How long is the visit?
That depends on the size and shape of the roof; most visits take between one and two hours at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. The report is sent afterwards by email.
Do you use drones?
Yes, where it applies and safe. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.
Is a chimney survey the same as a flue inspection?
No. Our survey covers the outside of the stack and the roof around it. For the flue, you will need a sweep or, for gas, a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What we do, step by step
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. The whole visit usually takes an hour or two at a typical home, and more on a big or complicated roof. Rural addresses near Chale Green can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- You let us know whether any stacks are shared, unused or leaning.
- The flashings and the roof around each chimney are inspected.
- The top of each stack is checked for cracked flaunching and loose pots.
- Any lean, spalling or worn pointing is recorded.
- The report explains the condition and which work is most urgent.
Before we arrive
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
- Check pets are kept safely away
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
