About our chimney survey in Roehampton
A chimney survey looks at the stack and everything around it: pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, bricks and the flashings at the roof line. Inside, we check chimney breasts and the stack in the loft where it’s safe to reach. You get a report with photographs and our recommendations. It suits a single stack on a house as well as several on a larger building. We survey lead flashings, brick chimney stacks and flaunching, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are bricks with flaking faces and loose, cracked or missing pots.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces are found right across London, often with slate roofs, chimney stacks shared with neighbours and gutters hidden behind parapets. Good slates can last over a hundred years, yet the nails frequently give out first and let slates slip. In Roehampton, as across London, that’s why a roof needs a careful look rather than a glance from the street. Lead flashings and shared chimney stacks on these houses need a close look too.
Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

DIY checks: what’s safe
It’s useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Chimney surveys in Roehampton: local notes
In outer London, interwar semis with hipped, tiled roofs sit alongside older slate-roofed terraces. If your home in Roehampton is one of them, bay roofs, hips and later dormers each have their own details. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. About 1.3 miles north-east lies Fulham Palace, a reminder of how long the area around Roehampton has been built on. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
Living close to Putney Heath is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn. Shop and office owners around Putney Exchange may find that a dated report on the roof is useful for planning and for any lease discussions.

Do you need a chimney survey in Roehampton?
Where a chimney meets the roof, lead flashings keep water out. With age they can lift, split or come away from the joints. Failed flashings are one of the most common causes of damp around chimneys. Lead flashings can also be stolen.
Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed one of these:
- Worn or missing pointing
- Gaps in the mortar around the pots
- Damp patches on chimney breasts
- Lifted or split lead flashings
For an older house near a landmark such as St Margaret's Church, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
- Will the report include photos?
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
Tips from our surveys
Small things make a difference. Our tips:
- Ask about consent before removing a chimney on an older property
- Check fixings on the stack are secure
- Check your stacks from the ground after strong winds
- Book a sweep for flues that are in use
If the report recommends a structural engineer, a sweep or a Gas Safe registered engineer, it will say why. That helps you brief them.
Have worn pointing and cracked flaunching dealt with early. Small repairs now can save bigger work later.
Roof by roof
Brick stacks
Spalled bricks, where the face has flaked off, are a sign of water and frost. We record any we can see.
Chimney pots and cowls
Each pot is bedded into the flaunching, frequently with a cowl or cap on top. The survey looks for cracked, loose or missing pots and cowls.
Roehampton questions
Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Roehampton?
Normally it’s manageable with a little notice. Let us know the parking rules on your street and we’ll work around them.
Is my home in Roehampton listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. The roof space can show things the outside can’t, like damp timbers, staining or daylight.
What insurance do you have?
Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.
What if it rains on the day?
Light rain doesn’t typically stop a survey, and it can even help show where water is getting in. Heavy rain or strong wind can ground a drone and make the roof unsafe, so we’ll agree a new date if the weather isn’t suitable.
What does a roof survey cost?
Chimney survey starts from £150, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report, and it doesn’t include calculations. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
How it works
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes about one to two hours for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. In converted houses and mansion blocks, the loft hatch is often on a shared landing. Where that’s the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there’s access.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations by email.
Before we arrive
- Let us know where we can park nearby
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear
