About our gutter survey in Roehampton
People book a gutter survey when gutters overflow, when damp appears or before the wetter months. Landlords and managing agents use it to plan maintenance and buyers sometimes want the gutters looked at before they exchange. The survey and report follow the same steps whatever the reason, with photographs and written recommendations. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. We survey parapet and box gutters, downpipes and outlets and hoppers, and people most frequently book us about cracked or loose downpipes and choked outlets or hopper heads.
Many London terraces have a butterfly roof, with two slopes meeting in a central valley gutter that drains to the rear. From the street you see only a parapet wall, so blocked outlets and split linings go unnoticed until water comes through a ceiling. For a house in Roehampton with this kind of roof, the hidden gutter is one of the first things to check.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Roehampton questions
Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Roehampton?
It depends on the street. If Roehampton has controlled parking where you are, a visitor permit is the easiest answer.
Can a landlord with a rental near Barnes station book a roof survey?
Yes, that’s a common request. We just need to know who will give access, and we can send the report to you or your agent.
What’s in the survey report?
You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos, finishing with recommendations. The most urgent items are made clear.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only when it’s safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers, and it does not include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.
When does the report arrive?
Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. If you have a deadline, such as an exchange date, let us know as you book.
Do you check valley and parapet gutters?
Yes, where it is safe to see them. We use the ground, windows, the loft space and the roof where it’s safe, and by drone where it’s applicable.
What we do, step by step
Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect what can be seen safely, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. The survey usually takes between one and two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. In a London area like Roehampton, the main things to sort out are parking and access: let us know about parking, the floor the property is on, any shared entrance and loft access. On the day, the roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space and from the roof where it is safe.
- You let us know where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from ground level.
- Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can be seen safely.
- The roof space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
- A report with photos and recommendations follows.
How to prepare
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Let us know about parking before the day
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed

Advice
What we’re asked to look at in Roehampton
Falling leaves are the most common cause of blocked gutters. Every autumn, trees fill gutters with leaves, twigs and seeds and the debris builds up at the outlets. Once an outlet is choked, the gutter fills and overflows.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Overflowing eaves gutters
- Leaks at the gutter joints
- Hoppers and outlets full of debris
- Downpipes that are split or coming away
If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near Putney Exchange, a roof report helps plan work around trading rather than after a leak.
What to check before booking
- Will the report include photos?
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- Which limits apply to the survey
DIY checks: what’s safe
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when booking, as it helps us focus the survey.
What affects the cost of gutter surveys
We confirm the price for your roof before booking. These are the things that affect it:
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- House, block, shop or office
We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you’d like to know.
Helping us price your survey
What helps most when you contact us:
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
- Where the property is, with the postcode
When you are ready to go ahead, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form. We will suggest a package, agree the price and find a date, weekday or weekend.
How the survey changes by roof type
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Aluminium and other metal gutters are used on many newer and commercial buildings. Their joints and outlets still need checking.
Fascias and soffits
Soffits and timber fascias suffer when gutters overflow. They’re looked at as part of the survey.

Gutter surveys around Roehampton
With Fulham Palace about 1.3 miles north-east, Roehampton sits in an area with a long building history. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof. Outer London has plenty of Victorian and Edwardian terraces with slate roofs, but also a great many interwar semis, frequently with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles. On a semi of that age, the small roofs over the bays, the hip tiles and any later dormer each need their own look. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.
Take a building like Granard Primary School: long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. Trees in and around Putney Heath shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters.
Roehampton is about 2 miles south-west of Fulham, in Greater London. Houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings in Roehampton can all book gutter surveys. We cover towns and villages across Greater London. You can also see our page for London.

Practical tips
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Have overhanging branches cut back
- Watch ceilings under valley gutters for fresh marks
- Don’t climb a ladder to look in the gutters
- Don’t leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
You receive a photo-illustrated written report and recommendations, prioritised by urgency where relevant. Share it with a contractor of your choice so they know what needs doing.
Hidden gutters need clearing too. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but you cannot check them from the street, so ask for them to be included when gutters are cleared.
