Gutter surveys in Fulham

Can I check my roof myself?

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.

About our gutter survey in Fulham

Gutters carry rain off the roof and away from the walls. When they block, leak or lose their fall, the water goes where it shouldn’t, often down the brickwork or into the building. Our survey looks at the whole rainwater system above ground, from eaves gutters and valleys to outlets, hoppers and downpipes. You get a photo-illustrated written report. We survey fascias and soffits, eaves gutters and parapet and box gutters, and common reasons people get in touch are gutters full of debris and silt and cracked or loose downpipes.

A London butterfly roof slopes down to a central valley gutter that drains to the back of the house. Hidden behind the parapet, that gutter can block or split without anyone seeing it. If your home in Fulham has one, it needs checking from somewhere that can actually see it.

If any part of the gutter couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Local roofs in Fulham

With Fulham Palace about 0.7 miles south-west, Fulham sits in an area with a long building history. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Inner London’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces often have Welsh slate roofs. A butterfly roof with a central valley gutter, tucked behind a parapet wall, is common on these houses. Shared chimney stacks, party-wall upstands and lead work come with this kind of house. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.

If you live in an older home near St. Peter's Church, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. Living close to Parsons Green (park) is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn. If you let a flat or house near West Brompton station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.

Fulham is about 2 miles south of Kensington, in Greater London. Anywhere in Fulham, we can carry out gutter surveys at your property, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday. Fulham is one of the towns and villages in Greater London where we work for gutter surveys.

What we need to know

A few details help us suggest the right survey and price. When you contact us, it is useful to mention:

  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access

Different roofs, different checks

Cast iron gutters

Cracks often open on the back of cast iron downpipes, so we look closely at the walls around them.

Aluminium and other metal gutters

Metal gutters can suffer at joints and where different metals meet. Any leaks or corrosion we spot go in the report.

Practical tips

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:

  • Watch for green marks down the brickwork
  • Don’t leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
  • Check for spilling water in a downpour
  • Check downpipe clips are holding

After any work is done, watch the gutters in the next heavy rain. Rain should flow to the outlets and down the downpipes, and if it does not, raise it with whoever did the job.

Have overhanging branches and climbing plants cut back from the roof by someone who can do it safely. Less debris means fewer blocked outlets.

How it works

The visit has one job: to look at the gutter as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit usually takes between one and two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. In converted houses and mansion blocks, the loft hatch is often on a shared landing. Where that is the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Otherwise, the visit in Fulham runs like any other.

  1. We agree which parts of the building you are most worried about.
  2. Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
  3. Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
  4. Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
  5. Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.

Before we arrive

  • Check the loft hatch can be reached
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Leave side gates unlocked

What we can’t see

Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Bear these in mind:

  • The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
  • Pipes below ground level
  • Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Downpipes
  • Valley gutters
  • Fascias and soffits
  • Eaves gutters
  • Outlets and hoppers

Fulham: your questions answered

Can a landlord with a rental near West Brompton station book a roof survey?

Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and what you need, and we will talk through which survey suits.

Is parking a problem for a survey in Fulham?

Sometimes, yes. If Fulham has controlled parking where you are, a visitor permit is the easiest answer.

Is a Saturday or Sunday visit possible?

Yes. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. To find a day that suits, call 07833 053749 or email us.

Does someone need to be in?

Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

What happens next?

You’ll get the report by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years, and 98% of clients are satisfied.
