Landlord and commercial surveys in Taplow

With a portfolio of properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the addresses.

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work.

How a chimney survey works in Taplow

Our survey covers the structure of the stack and its weathering details. It isn’t a flue inspection, a sweep or a gas safety check. If you use a fire or a gas appliance, the flue should be checked by a sweep or a Gas Safe registered engineer as appropriate. We’ll tell you if we see anything that suggests they should take a look. If you are worried about signs that a stack is leaning and eroded joints in the brickwork, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

Older buildings in small places like Taplow may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

How we price chimney surveys

Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before booking. This is what makes a difference:

  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own

Our price is from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, access and the package you choose.

Getting in touch

When you call or email, these details help:

  • Any marks or damp showing indoors
  • When you need the report by
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Anything about access we should know

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To get started, call 07833 053749 or email us.

Different roofs, different checks

Brick stacks

Brick stacks rely on sound pointing to keep water out. The survey looks for crumbling bricks and worn or missing mortar.

Lead flashings

Where the chimney meets the roof slopes, lead flashings keep water out. The survey looks at whether the lead is tight, sound and well fixed.

When to book a survey in Taplow

Removing a chimney breast inside can leave questions about how the stack is supported. We record what we can see in the loft and outside, and recommend a structural engineer where support is in question.

Things that frequently lead to a survey include:

  • A stack that appears to lean
  • Gaps where the stack meets the roof
  • Damp patches on chimney breasts
  • Redundant stacks capped without ventilation

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as St Nicolas' Church of England Combined School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

Before you book any roof surveyor

  • How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price
  • Will the report include photos?
  • Their drone registration, if they fly one

What a roof survey includes

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Taplow

Cliveden, about 1.8 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Taplow. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.

If you let a flat or house near Taplow station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. Living close to Braywick Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.

Taplow: your questions answered

Is Taplow within the area you cover?

Yes, Taplow is covered. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

I let a flat near Taplow station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, landlords and letting agents book with us as well as owners. You can phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address and some details.

Can you survey a chimney stack we share with next door?

Yes. Many houses share stacks with a neighbour. We record the stack as far as we can see it and flag anything on the neighbour’s side.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

How soon will I get the report?

It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.

Do I need to be at home?

Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

Do you need to go on the roof to check the chimney?

Each stack is viewed from the safest viewpoints: the ground, nearby windows and higher points, and the loft space. Our Premium Survey includes a drone inspection where it applies. We note anything we couldn’t see.

How the survey works

Before we start, let us know why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit normally takes an hour or two for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. In a hamlet or village like Taplow, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
  2. Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
  3. Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
  4. We look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft space.
  5. The report, with photos and recommendations, is emailed to you.

Before the survey

  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • If you’re buying, let the agent know when we are coming
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
