How a drone roof survey works in California

We fly a sub-250g drone, and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and within the 120-metre limit that applies to all drones in the open category. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. We never fly where it isn’t safe. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, tall and steep roofs and flat roofs on upper floors, and people most frequently book us about vegetation in valleys and gutters and debris building up in hidden gutters.

Even in a smaller place like California, there may be airfields or restrictions nearby, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Open ground can mean stronger wind, which also affects whether a small drone can fly. Each flight is planned with neighbours’ privacy in mind, as well as the airspace and the wind.

The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Flying and imaging in California

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. A number of Buckinghamshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

Take a building like Oak Green School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Take an older house close to Church of St Mary: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. For businesses in and around places such as Friars Square, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.

California is about 1 mile south of Aylesbury, in Buckinghamshire. We survey roofs in California and the surrounding area as part of our work across London and the South East. Our area takes in places right across Buckinghamshire. We also survey roofs in Milton Keynes.

Drone roof surveys in HP21, HP20 and HP19 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Streets in the area include Lee Road, Penn Road and Eaton Road, all of which we cover. California is on the A41 and A418, which makes it simple to reach. Nearby, we also carry out drone roof surveys in Aylesbury (1 mile north), Walton (1 mile east), Queens Park (1 mile east), Southcourt (1 mile south) and New Zealand (1 mile north). Further out, we also cover High Wycombe (13 miles south), Chesham (11 miles south-east), Buckingham (15 miles north-west), Amersham (13 miles south-east), Princes Risborough (6 miles south) and Haddenham (6 miles south-west).

Landmarks near California

Around California, our work takes us to homes and buildings near Pebble Brook School, Buckinghamshire UTC and King's Head Inn. There is a railway station in California itself: Aylesbury station. Well-known places in the area include Friars Square (under half a mile north-east) and Dinton Castle (3.4 miles west). For a walk, there is Beacon Hill.

Roof by roof

Ridges and hips

Ridges may be bedded in mortar or mechanically fixed. We record what we see of their condition.

Large commercial roofs

Large commercial roofs cover a lot of ground. The drone covers the roof area by area, so nothing is skipped.

The survey, step by step

When we arrive, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. After that, we look at everything we can see safely, from ground level, from windows, in the loft space and by drone where it applies. The survey typically takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Being in a smaller place like California doesn’t change how the visit works: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Why get it checked now?

Faults on high roofs tend to be found late. By that stage the damage has spread inside. Looking from above picks up the early signs. Around California, leaves and moss in gutters lead to overflowing water and damp walls. It’s easy to sort the cause early and slow to dry a damp wall.

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

What a drone roof survey does not cover

Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:

  • Close-up photos of next door’s property
  • Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
  • A flight on a day when the weather is not safe

If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. The full list of what we check.

California: your questions answered

Are there drone restrictions around California?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.

Do you cover smaller places like California?

Yes, California is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.

Are you insured?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.

How long will you be at the property?

Time on site depends on the roof; most visits take about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. The written report follows by email.

Does the weather affect the survey?

A survey can normally go ahead in light rain, and it can even help show where water is getting in. High wind or heavy rain can stop drone flights and make roof access unsafe, so if conditions are not right we will arrange another day with you.

What’s the best way to book?

Just ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.

What you can safely check yourself

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
