Drone roof survey in Hollingdean: what you get
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photos of those roofs from the air. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. The photos go into a written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. Where a flight isn’t possible, we explain why. We survey tall and steep roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and chimney stacks, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are gaps where slates or tiles have gone and ridge and hip pieces working loose.
In smaller places like Hollingdean, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from the ground. The parts you cannot see, such as rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. Both depend on the weather on the day, as calm, dry conditions suit both. Even so, a close-up image frequently shows wear on ridges and flashings that a view from ground level misses.
Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

Flying and imaging in Hollingdean
Hollingdean is within about 2 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. Hollingdean has a number of hotels within about a mile and a half. If you look after one, a large roof can be surveyed without guests having anyone working above them.
With Preston Manor & Gardens about 0.9 miles west, the area around Hollingdean has a long history. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Hollingdean means lost rooms as well as repairs. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Churchill Square, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it.

How it works
Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photographs, emailed to you. On timing, it typically takes an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. In a smaller place like Hollingdean, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from the ground and the loft can go ahead in most weather.
- We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
- A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- We also look inside the roof space where it’s safe.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
How to prepare
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Hollingdean
Are there drone restrictions around Hollingdean?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hollingdean?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
What’s the best way to book?
To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know the address and what you want to find out. We will confirm the price and find a day that suits.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when you book and we will explain what’s needed.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We’re roof surveyors, not structural engineers, and it doesn’t include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.
What will the report tell me?
It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, with photos throughout. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely.

Yes. We survey roofs in Hollingdean and the rest of Brighton and Hove. To book, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.
Roof by roof
Steep slate and tile slopes
Steep roofs are risky to walk on. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position, showing slipped, cracked and missing pieces.
Chimney stacks
Our drone check of a chimney is visual, and it is not a flue or gas safety check. We’ll say if a specialist is needed.
Before and after the survey
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Move stored items away from the hatch
- Allow for a change of day in poor weather
- Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
- Book early if you’re near an airport
The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. The photos show the location and extent of every problem, so their quotes cover the same ground.
After a storm, check from the garden and the street. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone can show exactly what has moved.
Prices for drone roof surveys in Hollingdean
To price your survey, we look at:
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
- Height and safe access
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
To find out what your survey will cost, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and tell us about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.
What to tell us when you get in touch
We’ll usually ask about:
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To arrange a day that suits you, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and the days you’d prefer.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, putting the urgent items at the top.
Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on, photos included.
Why get it checked now?
Photographing a roof from the air does not touch it. Nothing is cracked or dislodged by footsteps, so the survey doesn’t create new problems. With lower homes, common in places like Hollingdean, there’s little between a roof defect and the ceiling, so a small leak can mark a ceiling within a few storms. Catching the cause first saves redecorating as well.
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.
