Drone roof survey in Ivybridge

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. The photos go into a written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we cannot fly, we tell you why. We survey fragile roofs, large and complex roofs and chimney stacks, and common reasons people get in touch are lead work pulling away at abutments and slates or tiles shifted by high winds.

Many London roofs are hidden from the pavement: valley gutters behind parapets, dormers and flat-roofed rear additions. That is where a view from the air or a thermal camera helps, by showing what cannot be reached safely. The weather decides the day: both drones and thermal cameras need the right conditions. Thermal images show surface temperature, not water itself, so findings are checked with moisture readings.

Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Drone roof surveys around Ivybridge

The flight restriction zone around Heathrow Airport comes within about 1 mile of Ivybridge. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. Alongside Victorian and Edwardian terraces, outer London has a great many interwar semis, often with hipped roofs of clay or concrete tiles. On a semi of that age, the small roofs over the bays, the hip tiles and any later dormer each need their own look. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up aerial photos and thermal images help.

For businesses in and around places like Treaty Centre, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof. Richmond House, about 1.1 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Ivybridge. For older roofs nearby, a look from above or with a thermal imager is a hands-off way to check condition. Controlled parking zones are common in London, so mention any permit rules for Ivybridge.

Ivybridge is about 1 mile south-east of Hounslow, in Greater London. We carry out drone roof surveys for homeowners, landlords and businesses in Ivybridge. Ivybridge is one of the places in Greater London where we work for drone roof surveys. There is also a page for London.

Tips that help

Most of what helps is simple and safe from ground level. A few suggestions:

  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Let us know about any leaks or concerns
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed

Premium also includes a 12-month follow-up. It shows whether anything has moved or worn since the first visit.

Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On high roofs, leave clearing to a professional. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.

What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover

This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • A structural engineer’s report
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

DIY checks: what’s safe

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.

Different roofs, different checks

Steep slate and tile slopes

Steep slopes are hard to inspect safely on foot. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position.

Chimney stacks

Leaning stacks and loose pots are easier to judge from above. We record what we find with photos.

What we do, step by step

Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes an hour or two for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Surveys in Ivybridge can be booked for any day of the week. It helps if you can point us to a visitor permit or a nearby bay, and to clear a path to the loft hatch. Upstairs rooms at the back are useful too, as they frequently give the best view of a rear addition.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it’s checked too.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

Advice

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Ivybridge

Is my home in Ivybridge listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Is parking a problem for a survey in Ivybridge?

Sometimes, yes. Where there are permit zones, a visitor permit or nearby pay-and-display bay works well.

What happens after the survey?

You receive the written report by email, with photographs and recommendations. It is yours to share with a seller, insurer, roofer or managing agent, whichever applies.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only if it is safe. We inspect what can be seen safely: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we can’t see is noted in the report.

Will the drone show what’s under the tiles?

No. The drone photographs the outer surfaces, but it can’t see under the coverings. Where there’s safe access, we check the loft space from inside.

What if my home is near an airport?

Near airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, London City and Stansted, flight restriction zones apply. We check the airspace for your address and seek permission where it is needed. If we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points.

Will you photograph what you find?

Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.
