When you need someone else

It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:

  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying
  • A structural engineer’s report
  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Chimney stacks
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

How a drone roof survey works in Jury's Gap

Drones need reasonable weather. Strong wind or heavy rain rules out a flight, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the weather turns, we’ll agree another day. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We are frequently asked to look into standing water on a flat roof and damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below, on valleys and parapet gutters, large and complex roofs and tall and steep roofs.

Older buildings in small places like Jury's Gap may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Drones, thermal imaging and Jury's Gap roofs

Jury's Gap lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs, and the county’s older buildings include oast houses and Wealden hall houses. Steep or complicated roofs are frequently hard to see from ground level, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

In and around Jury's Gap, as anywhere, a roof is easiest to deal with when its problems are found early. Historic houses such as Lamb House, about 4.4 miles west, show how far back building around Jury's Gap goes. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof itself.

Jury's Gap is about 12 miles east of Hastings, in East Sussex. We survey roofs in Jury's Gap and the rest of East Sussex. We cover towns and villages across East Sussex, large and small. Our Maidstone page covers surveys nearby.

Jury's Gap questions

Are there drone restrictions around Jury's Gap?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Is Jury's Gap within the area you cover?

Yes, Jury's Gap is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

What insurance do you have?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

How soon will I get the report?

That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only when it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, if whoever owns or manages the building agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach.

What a survey costs

Prices always include VAT. The things that change the price are:

  • Which survey package you book
  • House, block, shop or office
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • Height and safe access

Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Prices start from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Getting in touch

You do not need to know any roofing terms. It’s enough to let us know:

  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors
  • Your timetable, like an exchange date
  • Anything about access we should know

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from the ground or a window; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

What we do, step by step

When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you want to find out. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. Most surveys take about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. In a hamlet or village like Jury's Gap, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
  • Let us know about parking before the day

Why it is worth a survey now in Jury's Gap

Planning roof work without seeing the roof is a gamble. You get photographs of every part we can see, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. How the survey changes by roof type

Valleys and parapet gutters

Valleys and parapet gutters are hidden from the street. A drone shows linings, joints and build-ups of debris.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

The flat roof on top of a block is rarely looked at. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.

Practical tips

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:

  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to go through what the drone showed. It is a chance to ask about anything in the report.

Every so often, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.
