How a drone roof survey works in Pickhurst
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail. Everything we find goes into a photo-illustrated written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. Where a flight isn’t possible, we explain why. Typical surveys look at wind damage high on the roof and chimney tops in poor condition, across chimney stacks, large and complex roofs and tall and steep roofs.
Some older homes in villages like Pickhurst are listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.
You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Roof by roof
Chimney stacks
The drone shows the outside of the stack, and it is not a flue or gas safety check. We’ll say if a specialist is needed.
Steep slate and tile slopes
On slate roofs, slipped slates often point to corroded nails. Close-up photos show how widespread it is.
How it works
There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Cottages and farmhouses around Pickhurst often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
- Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
- We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
- We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Pickhurst questions
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Pickhurst?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Pickhurst?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Visible signs like deflection or sagging are recorded, but we don’t provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.
What does the report include?
It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos. Points are put in order of urgency where relevant.
Does the weather affect the survey?
Light rain is normally fine; heavy rain and wind are different. In strong wind or a downpour, a drone cannot fly and access may not be safe, so we’d move the date with you.
Does someone need to be in?
That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed as you book.

What a drone roof survey does not cover
In fairness, a roof survey has limits:
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads

What we are asked to look at in Pickhurst
Large roofs take a long time to see on foot. The drone covers the surface area by area, showing patterns of wear that are hard to spot up close. That gives a clearer picture of the roof as a whole.
Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:
- Loose ridge and hip tiles
- Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
- Lifted or split lead flashings
- Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
Historic houses such as Old Place Manor, about 1.2 miles south, show how far back building around Pickhurst goes. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof itself.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether VAT is added on top
- What the survey will not cover
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- What follow-up you get after the report
What a drone roof survey looks like in Pickhurst
Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. In Sussex, older roofs are frequently handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.
For any home in Pickhurst, it is the small, early fault that is cheapest to put right.
