Drone roof surveys in Roxbourne

About our drone roof survey in Roxbourne

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We don’t fly in strong wind or a downpour, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the weather turns, we’ll agree another day or inspect what we can by other means. We check the forecast ahead of the visit and again on site. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, tall and steep roofs and fragile roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are ridge pieces that have lifted and blocked valleys and parapet gutters.

Flying in London takes more checking than most places: restriction zones surround Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas of their own. Before a drone goes up in Roxbourne, the address is checked against all of them, and where permission is needed, the flight waits for it.

Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, with a note and a photo for each point. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

What we look for on each type of roof

Large commercial roofs

Cement sheet roofs on buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. We don’t test for it, but we flag it so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Blocked outlets in hidden gutters cause many leaks. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.

Can I check my roof myself?

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

How we price drone roof surveys

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:

  • Height and safe access
  • House, block, shop or office
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • How big the roof is

To find out what your survey will cost, ring 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the roof. We’ll confirm the figure before booking.

What we need to know

Some details help us point you to the right survey and price. When you contact us, let us know:

  • What’s prompted the survey
  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • The address and postcode of the property

Not sure which survey you need? It’s easiest to phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We will talk you through the options and what they cost.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Small defects on a high roof grow with each storm. Spotting them early keeps the work smaller. A hidden valley or parapet gutter on a London house can hold water for weeks before anyone notices. When the stain finally shows, the damage underneath is often older than it looks.

Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

Flying and imaging in Roxbourne

RAF Northolt is about 3 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. Historic houses like Headstone Manor, about 1.8 miles north-east, show how far back building in the area around Roxbourne goes. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near St. Andrew’s Church, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image. Roxbourne is in London, so parking needs planning: let us know about parking bays, permits or a driveway as you book. Anyone responsible for a site like The Moriah Jewish Day School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

What we do, step by step

After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photographs. As for time on site, it usually takes an hour or two at most homes, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Surveys in Roxbourne can be booked for any day of the week. London parking is frequently by permit or pay-and-display, so it’s useful to know what’s near you, and to clear a path to the loft hatch. Upstairs rooms at the back are useful too, as they often give the best view of a rear addition.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Check pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Roxbourne

Is my home in Roxbourne listed or in a conservation area?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Roxbourne?

Normally it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. RAF Northolt is about 3 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

It depends on what we need to see. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in, while outside access can be discussed when you book.

How long is the visit?

Time on site depends on the roof, but most surveys take about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. The report is sent afterwards by email.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll explain what’s needed.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
