About our drone roof survey in Southend
Neighbours’ privacy matters on every flight. We keep the camera on the roof we are surveying, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is shared, a word with next door beforehand helps. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. If you’ve noticed damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below and blistered or cracked flat roof coverings, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on chimney stacks, valleys and parapet gutters and flat roofs on upper floors alike.
London’s roofs are often hard to see from the street: valley gutters behind parapets, dormers and flat-roofed rear additions. That’s where a view from the air or a thermal camera helps, by showing what cannot be reached safely. Weather on the day decides whether it goes ahead, in Southend as anywhere. What a thermal image shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

What happens on the day
We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. In total, it takes about 1–2 hours for most houses, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In Southend, visits are available on weekdays and at weekends. London parking is often by permit or pay-and-display, so it’s useful to know what’s near you. Upstairs rooms at the back are useful too, as they often give the best view of a rear addition.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
- On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch

How we price drone roof surveys
When we price a survey, we consider:
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- The size of the roof
- House, block, shop or office
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before booking.

Common questions in Southend
Are there drone restrictions around Southend?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Southend?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
What insurance do you have?
Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.
What’s in the report?
A photo-illustrated written report, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.

Practical tips
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
- Keep pets indoors during the flight
- Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet
The Premium Survey report comes the same day. It includes the drone photos where a flight was possible.
Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Take photos of any changes.
Drones, thermal imaging and Southend roofs
We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons.
Take a building like Elfrida Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. Controlled parking zones are common in London, so mention any permit rules for Southend, along with any off-street space.

What we are asked to look at in Southend
Big commercial and industrial roofs cover a lot of ground. A drone can photograph a large roof methodically, showing patterns of wear that are hard to spot up close. You see the whole roof, not just the parts near an access point.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- Loose ridge and hip tiles
- Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
- Chimney tops in poor condition
- Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
Shop and office owners around Lewisham Shopping Centre may find that thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.
