How the survey changes by roof type

Large commercial roofs

Many commercial roofs have fragile sheets or roof lights. A drone keeps everyone off them.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Leaks frequently start at outlets, edges and around plant. We photograph them closely, as far as the flight allows.

How a drone roof survey works in Willesden Green

Every flight starts with an airspace check. Near protected airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If we can’t fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and explain why. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. If you’re worried about wind damage high on the roof and lead work pulling away at abutments, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

Many London roofs are hidden from the pavement: valley gutters behind parapets, dormers and flat-roofed rear additions. Drone photos and thermal images can show parts of a roof that are hard to reach safely. The weather decides the day: both drones and thermal cameras need the right conditions. What a thermal image shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.

We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, and recommendations are put in order of urgency where relevant.

Before and after the survey

Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:

  • Check there’s room outside for the drone to take off
  • Let us know about any leaks or concerns
  • Keep pets indoors during the flight
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather

If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. They’ll see exactly where each defect is.

Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.

When you need someone else

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • A flight on a day when the weather is not safe

What this survey covers

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Fragile roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Tall and steep roofs

How the survey works

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Surveys in Willesden Green can be booked for any day of the week. London parking is often by permit or pay-and-display, so it is useful to know what’s near you. Upstairs rooms at the back are useful too, as they often give the best view of a rear addition.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. Where there is safe access, we check the loft as well.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

Why get it checked now?

Faults on high roofs tend to be found late. By that stage the damage has spread inside. A drone survey finds them sooner. London’s older roofs often have bitumen felt underlay or none at all, so once the slates or flashings let water past, little stops it reaching ceilings. Left unchecked, water soaks into timber and plaster and the damage spreads.

Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, including VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Willesden Green questions

Is drone flying allowed in Willesden Green?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Is my home in Willesden Green listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so the freeholder or managing agent needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it’s safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

When does the report arrive?

It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. Reports are sent by email.

How long is the visit?

It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. You’ll then get the report by email.

Do you work in Willesden Green?

Yes. We cover Willesden Green and the rest of Greater London, as part of our work across London and the South East. For a price, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Drone roof surveys in Willesden Green: local notes

With Fenton House about 2.5 miles north-east, Willesden Green sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up.

For businesses in and around places such as O2 Centre, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. As a London address, Willesden Green can be tricky for parking: let us know about parking bays, permits or a driveway as you book, as a space near the door can’t be promised. For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Andrew, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.
