Drone roof survey in Kensal Rise: what you get

Every flight starts with an airspace check. Near protected airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If permission is not given, we inspect by other means and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. Typical surveys look at moss building up on slopes and in gutters and loose ridge and hip tiles, on chimney stacks, large and complex roofs and tall and steep roofs.

London airspace is busy and tightly controlled: restriction zones surround Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas of their own. Before a drone goes up in Kensal Rise, the address is checked against all of them, and where permission is needed, the flight waits for it.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover

This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:

  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will point you to the right survey. What our survey covers.

Roofs we survey in Kensal Rise

  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs

Useful tips for Kensal Rise property owners

There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • Make sure there is room outside for the drone to take off

Keep the photos with your property records. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys, and they help if you sell.

Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. The underside frequently shows problems before the outside does. Take photos of any changes.

Why act early in Kensal Rise

Photos from a drone survey show how the roof looks today. Next time, you can compare and see what has moved or worn. It helps when you plan ahead. In a London terrace or conversion, a roof defect rarely stays your problem alone: failed flashings and blocked valley gutters can send water into more than one home. Finding it early keeps the work smaller.

Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can be seen safely and which survey you book.

What you get with us

  • Thermal imaging and drone inspection where they help
  • PI and public liability insurance

How the survey works

Before we start, let us know why you’ve booked: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take between one and two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. In Kensal Rise, as in much of London, lots of properties are flats or terraces without side access, so the back of the roof is frequently seen from upstairs windows, from inside or, where a flight is allowed, from the air. If the building has a managing agent or access rules, tell us as you book.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Do you need a drone roof survey in Kensal Rise?

Parapet gutters, box gutters and central valleys sit out of sight. Debris collects where nobody looks, until it causes a leak inside. From above, they’re easy to see.

People usually book a survey after spotting one of these:

  • Outlets choked with leaves and silt
  • Lead work pulling away at abutments
  • Standing water on a flat roof
  • Cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below

If you run a hotel or guest house in or near Kensal Rise, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use, so it pays to find faults before guests do.

Common questions in Kensal Rise

How do I find out if my home in Kensal Rise is listed?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Is drone flying allowed in Kensal Rise?

Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.

What happens next?

The report arrives by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation.

Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, with 98% customer satisfaction.

How much is a survey?

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. We confirm the price for your roof before you book. To get a price, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

How long is the visit?

It normally takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. The report follows by email.

Flying and imaging in Kensal Rise

Inner London’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces often have Welsh slate roofs. A butterfly roof with a central valley gutter, tucked behind a parapet wall, is common on these houses. Shared chimney stacks, party-wall upstands and lead work come with this kind of house. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Westfield London, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. Take a building like Ark Franklin Primary Academy: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

What you can safely check yourself

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
