Drones, thermal imaging and Kensal Town roofs
The flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea comes within about 2 miles of Kensal Town. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. There are several hotels within about a mile and a half of Kensal Town. If you look after one, a large roof can be surveyed without guests having anyone working above them.
Take a building like St Thomas' CofE Primary School: big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once. If you run a business near Westfield London, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.

Drone roof survey in Kensal Town
Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. The Premium Survey includes a drone inspection where applicable, with a same-day report, structural analysis and an in-person consultation. It also includes a follow-up after 12 months. If a drone won’t help on your roof, we’ll say so. You get a written report with the close-up photos from the flight. If you’ve noticed lead work pulling away at abutments and ponding and splits on a high flat roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on fragile roofs, chimney stacks and tall and steep roofs alike.
Flying in London takes more checking than most places: restriction zones surround Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas of their own. Before a drone goes up in Kensal Town, the address is checked against all of them, and permission is never taken for granted.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

Practical tips
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- Expect a little longer if permission is needed
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
- Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
We email the report to you, including the close-up photos taken by the drone. Each finding is explained in plain words, and recommendations are ranked by urgency where that helps.
Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, so small faults are dealt with early.
When to book a survey in Kensal Town
The top of a stack is the most exposed part of many roofs. Cracked flaunching, loose pots and eroded pointing are frequently invisible from below. A drone gets close enough to see them in detail.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- Lead work pulling away at abutments
- Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
- Ridge pieces that have lifted
- Outlets choked with leaves and silt
For hotels and guest houses around Kensal Town, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- How long the report takes to arrive
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
What we look for on each type of roof
Large commercial roofs
Large commercial roofs cover a lot of ground. A drone photographs the whole surface methodically, so nothing is skipped.
Valleys and parapet gutters
Hidden gutters and valleys sit out of sight. A drone shows linings, joints and build-ups of debris.
Landlord and commercial surveys in Kensal Town
We survey roofs for letting agents and landlords as well as householders. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photos, useful for planning maintenance.
Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf, and the report can go to both. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
FAQs for Kensal Town
Can parking be tricky for a visit in Kensal Town?
It depends on the street. If Kensal Town has controlled parking where you are, a visitor permit is the easiest answer, and a driveway is even better.
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Kensal Town?
Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Kensal Town is about 2 miles from the edge of the flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so we need permission from whoever owns or manages the building. We can only inspect what we are given access to.
What happens next?
You’ll receive the report by email, and what you do next is up to you: raise it with a seller, send it to an insurer, brief a roofer or share it with a managing agent.
Can you survey in bad weather?
Some surveys depend on the weather more than others. Drones can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof and little wind. We will rearrange with you if the weather isn’t right.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
Will you check the loft?
If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft cannot be reached safely, the report says so.
What we cannot see
It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- A structural engineer’s report
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you before booking. What our survey covers.

What we do, step by step
We’ll ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. London terraces rarely offer a view of the whole roof from one spot, so in Kensal Town we work round the house, using the street, the windows, the loft and any safe vantage point behind it. Shared stairs or a basement flat? Let us know who holds the keys.
- First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
- Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
- We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
- The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
- Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.
How to prepare
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
- Find any records of previous roof work
- Leave side gates unlocked
