Flat roof survey in Burridge
We inspect a flat roof from wherever it can safely be seen: on the roof where it’s safe, from windows and higher ground, and from the rooms below where we can reach them. We do not walk on fragile rooflights or fragile roof sheeting. If part of the roof cannot be seen or reached safely, the report says so, so the limits of the survey are clear. We survey EPDM rubber, mastic asphalt and GRP fibreglass, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are leaks around rooflights and cracked or split membrane.
Older buildings in small places like Burridge may be listed or in a conservation area, and that can affect how an extension roof or dormer is re-covered. Check with the council before planning any change of material. Finding out what state the roof is in gives you the facts to plan with. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest.
What you get is a clear record of the flat roof on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later.

Tips from our surveys
Small things make a difference. Our tips:
- Check from a window for ponding after heavy rain
- Keep people off the roof unless they need to be there
- Book a survey every few years
- Watch the ceilings below the flat roof for stains
If anything in the report isn’t clear, just ask us. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one, so you can talk the findings through.
Book a survey every few years, and again after new fixings, units or rooflights go in. You will spot changes early and have a record to look back on.
What we look for on each type of roof
Mastic asphalt
With age, asphalt can harden and crack with movement. The report shows where it is cracking and how far it seems to extend.
Felt and built-up roofs
Built-up felt is one of the most common flat roof coverings on extensions, garages and dormers. The survey checks for blisters, cracks, open laps and bare patches where the surfacing has worn.
Flat roof surveys in Burridge: local notes
The coast is about 4 miles or less from Burridge, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Coastal wind works at the edges of flat roofs, and salt air wears metal trims and fixings. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.
If you own a rental within reach of Swanwick station, flat roofs over rear additions and dormers in rented property are worth checking between tenancies. Take a building like Whiteley Primary School: schools and public buildings often have big flat roofs, and their outlets and upstands need regular checks.

What we can’t see
We only report whatever is safely visible on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- The condition of the deck or insulation hidden under the covering
- Whether old sheeting or boards contain asbestos
- A structural engineer’s assessment of the deck

Burridge questions
Does being near the coast affect roofs in Burridge?
Generally, yes: wind and salt air take more of a toll near the sea. Exposed details such as ridges, verges, flashings and metal fixings are the ones to watch.
How do I find out if my home in Burridge is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.
Does the survey cover asbestos?
We do not test for asbestos. If we see materials that could contain it, like cement sheets on a building from before 2000, we flag them so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check them.
Should I worry about standing water on my flat roof?
Ponding is worth looking into. It often means a blocked outlet, poor falls or a dipping deck, and it wears the covering faster. Our survey notes the ponding and what seems to be causing it.
How do I arrange a flat roof survey in Burridge?
Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.
Will I get photos?
Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, so you can see what we mean.

Leave it or get it looked at?
By the time a flat roof leak shows indoors, water has already passed through the roof build-up. We can pick up worn covering and failing details sooner, while there’s still time to plan the work. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Burridge, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
Every price we give includes VAT. Prices start from £150, including VAT. You’ll know the price for the job before you book.

How it works
After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photos, emailed to you. As for time on site, it typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Somewhere as small as Burridge, access is frequently the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We agree the roof to be surveyed, its use and any leaks you know about.
- We check the roof from the ground, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
- The covering is checked for wear, splits, blisters and standing water.
- Upstands, outlets, edge trims and rooflights are checked and photographed.
- The report, with photographs and recommendations, comes to you by email.
Before we arrive
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand

Checking the roof from the ground
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
