Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Burmarsh
Gutters carry rain off the roof and away from the walls. When they block, leak or lose their fall, the water goes where it shouldn’t and that typically means the walls or the inside of the building. We check the full rainwater system above ground, including gutters, valleys, outlets, hoppers and downpipes. The findings go into a written report with photos. We survey valley gutters, parapet and box gutters and downpipes, and people most often book us about overflowing valley or parapet gutters and leaks at the gutter joints.
Some older homes in villages like Burmarsh are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is frequently expected.
Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

FAQs for Burmarsh
Does being near the coast affect roofs in Burmarsh?
Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.
Do you cover smaller places like Burmarsh?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
How quickly is the report sent?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed.
How long will you be on site?
For a house, expect about 1–2 hours on site, with commercial buildings nearer 3–4 hours.
Does the season matter for a gutter survey?
Whenever suits you. If you’ve already seen a gutter overflowing, it is best not to wait, because the walls take the water.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only where it is safe to do so. We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from the ground, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.
Will you check if gutters are causing damp inside?
Overflowing gutters frequently lead to damp walls, and the survey looks for that. If the evidence points elsewhere, we’ll say so as far as we can tell from what’s visible.
Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Burmarsh
Burmarsh lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. Across Kent, older roofs are often handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. Oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of the county’s older buildings too. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
Westenhanger Castle, about 3.5 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Burmarsh. If your home is one of the older ones, the roof may have been repaired many times, and the survey records how each part is holding up. For landlords with property near Westenhanger station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant. Take an older house close to Church of All Saints: corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.
Burmarsh is about 4 miles south-west of Hythe, in Kent. Wherever you are in Burmarsh, we can come and survey your property, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday. Across Kent, we cover Burmarsh and the places around it. We also survey roofs in Canterbury.
Postcode districts we cover here for gutter surveys: TN29. We cover properties on Church Road, Painesfield Close and Thorndike Road and the roads around them. We also work in nearby towns like Ashford (9 miles north-west), Dover (14 miles north-east), Folkestone (8 miles east), Hythe (4 miles north-east), Tower Hamlets (14 miles north-east) and Hawkinge (8 miles north-east).

What a gutter survey does not cover
It is a careful look at the gutter, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
- What’s behind fascias and inside walls
- Gutters out of sight from each safe vantage point
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll recommend the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.
What we check
- Valley gutters
- Eaves gutters
- Parapet and box gutters
- Downpipes
- Fascias and soffits
- Outlets and hoppers
What we do, step by step
We check the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey usually takes an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Somewhere as small as Burmarsh, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
- Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
Before the survey
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Related advice
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work around your tenants.
For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out by urgency where it matters, which helps when budgeting.
How the survey changes by roof type
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Metal gutters are common on commercial buildings and some homes. Joints, outlets and fixings are the parts we focus on.
Cast iron gutters
A cracked cast iron downpipe can leak down the wall unseen, so we check the wall behind for staining.
DIY checks: what’s safe
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Why it’s worth a survey now in Burmarsh
Climbing a ladder to look in the gutters yourself is risky. You can see drips and overflows from the ground but hidden gutters are another matter. Our survey covers what can be seen safely and records it with photos. Outbuildings and barns around Burmarsh are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.
