Independent gutter surveys in Chilgrove

How a gutter survey works in Chilgrove

We check the rainwater system above ground level: gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows. It’s not a CCTV drain survey, so we cannot see inside underground pipes. Where water seems to be backing up from below ground, the report will say so, with a suggestion to book a separate drain survey. Anything we find above ground, like a split hopper or a leaking downpipe, is photographed and recorded. If you are worried about valley or box gutters that overflow inside and gutters full of debris and silt, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

In a village or hamlet like Chilgrove, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. We report on what can be seen safely, and thatch is a specialist material. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.

The report doesn’t just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

What a gutter survey does not cover

It’s useful to know what a survey won’t do before booking:

  • Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
  • Parts of gutters that can’t be seen safely
  • Confirming asbestos in older rainwater goods

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Fascias and soffits
  • Valley gutters
  • Eaves gutters
  • Outlets and hoppers
  • Downpipes
  • Parapet and box gutters

Can I check my roof myself?

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

When to book a survey in Chilgrove

A good many tiled and slate roofs carry moss, and heavy rain washes clumps of it into the gutters. With grit from the coverings, it forms a thick sludge that holds water in the gutter and lets weeds take root.

It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • Gutters overflowing in heavy rain
  • Overflowing valley or parapet gutters
  • Sagging gutters and loose brackets
  • Choked outlets or hopper heads

Around Chilgrove, as everywhere, small roof faults are simplest to sort before they let water in.

What to check before booking

  • Will the report include photos?
  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • When you will get the report
  • What experience they bring

What to expect from a roof survey

Tips that help

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
  • Look out for overflows when it pours
  • Do not leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
  • Book gutter clearing once a year, more often near trees

Report times depend on the package you choose: within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. We email it to you once it’s done.

Get trees and climbers near the eaves trimmed back by someone who can do it safely. Less debris means fewer blocked outlets.

FAQs for Chilgrove

How do I find out if my home in Chilgrove is listed?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Do you cover smaller places like Chilgrove?

Yes, Chilgrove is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

How long does a gutter survey take?

For a house, expect about 1–2 hours on site, with commercial buildings nearer 3–4 hours.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only if it’s safe. We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where it applies, the Premium Survey.

How do I arrange a gutter survey in Chilgrove?

To book, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We will confirm the price and agree a day with you.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Chilgrove

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, including offices, shops and units. Larger roofs take longer.

An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

What happens on the day

Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect whatever is safely visible, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. Most visits take an hour or two at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. For a village or hamlet like Chilgrove, the journey is planned in advance: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.

  1. We ask about overflows, damp or leaks you’ve noticed.
  2. The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and vantage points.
  3. Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can safely be seen.
  4. The roof space is checked for water marks if it’s safe to get into.
  5. You get a written report with photographs and recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • Check pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Advice

Gutter surveys around Chilgrove

With West Dean House about 1.6 miles south-east, Chilgrove sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
