Common questions in Earlsfield
Is my home in Earlsfield listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
I let a flat near Earlsfield station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and a few details, including who will give access on the day.
Do you look in the roof space?
If there is a loft and safe access to it, yes. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that can’t be seen from outside.
What will the report tell me?
You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos. Points are put in order of urgency where relevant.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.
How much is a gutter survey?
The Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard from £250 and the Premium from £400, all including VAT. For a price for your building, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.
Will you check the drains below ground?
No. We look at above-ground rainwater only down to where the downpipes reach the ground. Where a below-ground drain seems to be the problem, we will tell you.
Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Earlsfield
Gutters have to slope gently towards the outlet or water sits in them. Sagging brackets and slipped joints leave water standing and overflowing at the low points. We check the line of each run as far as we can see it and look at the brackets and downpipe clips. You get written recommendations, prioritised by urgency where relevant. Typical surveys look at joints that drip after rain and blocked outlets and hoppers, on parapet and box gutters, eaves gutters and fascias and soffits.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces are found right across London, often with slate roofs, chimney stacks shared with neighbours and gutters hidden behind parapets. Slates can last a century or more, but the nails holding them corrode, and slates slip. Homes in Earlsfield are no exception. Lead flashings and shared chimney stacks on these houses need a close look too.
The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent.

Gutter surveys around Earlsfield
Many homes in inner London are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, often with Welsh slate roofs. A butterfly roof with a central valley gutter, tucked behind a parapet wall, is common on these houses. In a house like that, shared stacks, party-wall upstands and lead flashings all need looking at as far as they can be seen. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them. Historic houses like Fulham Palace, about 2.3 miles north-west, show how far back building in the area around Earlsfield goes. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof.
Living close to King George's Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching. If you own a rental within reach of Earlsfield station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.

Roof by roof
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Metal gutters can suffer at joints and where different metals meet. Any leaks or corrosion we spot go in the report.
Cast iron gutters
A cracked cast iron downpipe can leak down the wall unseen, so we check the wall behind for staining.
What this survey cannot tell you
Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:
- Pipes below ground level
- Blockages deep inside downpipes
- Parts of gutters that can’t be seen safely
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you before you book. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers
- Eaves gutters
- Downpipes
- Parapet and box gutters
- Outlets and hoppers
- Valley gutters
- Fascias and soffits
Common roof problems in Earlsfield
Many gutter joints depend on rubber seals or sealant that age. Plastic sections expand and contract with the weather, and in time their joints can drip. On cast iron, joints can rust and open up once the paint has worn away.
Things that frequently lead to a survey include:
- Hoppers and outlets full of debris
- Water spilling over the gutter edge
- Gutters full of debris and silt
- Leaks at the gutter joints
For an older house near a landmark such as St John the Divine, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.
Questions to ask before you book
- What insurance they carry
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
- Whether VAT is in the quoted price
- Their track record with similar roofs
What happens on the day
A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from every safe vantage point, take photos as we go and make notes for the report. Most visits take an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. For a visit in Earlsfield, parking and access are the things to plan: tell us about permits, visitor bays or off-street space, which floor the property is on and how to get into the loft. On the day, the roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from inside the loft space and from the roof where it’s safe.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
Preparing for the visit
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
- Find any records of previous roof work
- Leave a clear route to the loft
