About our gutter survey in Force Green

Leaves, moss and silt are the usual reasons gutters block. Homes close to trees fill their gutters faster and moss from the roof slopes makes it worse. We note where gutters are clogged or holding water, which outlets and hoppers are choked and whether overflows are working. Photos show each problem clearly. It’s an easy job to put off, but they rarely get better. We survey valley gutters, fascias and soffits and parapet and box gutters, and people most often book us about hoppers and outlets full of debris and overflowing valley or parapet gutters.

London has a great many flats in converted houses and purpose-built blocks, so roofs are frequently shared between several households. Whoever looks after the building needs a clear picture of the roof, chimneys and gutters, in Force Green as anywhere. A defect on a shared roof can reach more than one flat. A report gives everyone the same picture to plan from, with photographs.

After the visit, you get a report with photos, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the gutter, any defects and our written recommendations.

Can I check my roof myself?

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

When you need someone else

No survey can tell you everything, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

  • Hidden sections we can’t view safely
  • What’s behind fascias and inside walls
  • Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you before you book. The full list of what we check.

How it works

After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a written report with photos. On timing, it normally takes about 1–2 hours for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Many London properties are flats or terraces with no side access, so the back of the roof is frequently seen from upstairs windows, from inside or, where a flight is allowed, from the air. If the building has a managing agent or access rules, tell us when you book.

  1. You tell us where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
  2. We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from ground level.
  3. We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
  4. Where it is safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
  5. A photo-illustrated written report and recommendations follows.

Preparing for the visit

Gutter surveys around Force Green

Quebec House, about 0.8 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Force Green. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Outer London has plenty of Victorian and Edwardian terraces with slate roofs, but also a great many interwar semis, frequently with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles. Hips, bay roofs and later loft conversions are typical of those semis, if your home is one of them. Whatever the covering, it’s frequently the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.

If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Church of St Mary the Virgin, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine. For landlords with property near Oxted station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.

Force Green is about 5 miles west of Sevenoaks, in Greater London. In Force Green, as across Greater London, every roof gets the same careful survey. Our Greater London coverage includes Force Green and the places around it. There’s also a page for Crawley.

Common questions in Force Green

How do I find out if my home in Force Green is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Can a landlord with a rental near Oxted station book a roof survey?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and what you need, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.

Does the report include photos?

Yes. Photos are part of every report, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.

Do you look in the loft space?

Usually, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. The loft space can show things the outside cannot, like damp timbers, staining or daylight.

How do I book a survey in Force Green?

The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or email us. Give us the address and some details about the roof, and we will suggest the right survey. We survey on any day of the week.

Can the survey be at a weekend?

Yes, weekend visits are possible as well as weekdays. Just ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email to arrange it.

Do I need to be at home?

That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the roof space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed when booking.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Force Green

Small gutter faults rarely fix themselves. Each heavy rain puts more water where it shouldn’t be on the walls, the fascias and sometimes the rooms inside. A survey now tells you what needs doing and how urgent it is. In Force Green, as in much of London, water from a roof defect can reach a neighbour’s home as easily as yours: failed flashings and blocked valley gutters can send water into more than one home. Finding it early keeps the work smaller.

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. You’ll know the figure before booking.

Cast iron gutters

Cracks often open on the back of cast iron downpipes, so we check the wall behind for staining.

Aluminium and other metal gutters

Metal gutters can suffer at joints and where different metals meet. Any leaks or corrosion we spot go in the report.

Do you need a gutter survey in Force Green?

Moss grows on many tiled and slate roofs, and heavy rain washes clumps of it into the gutters. With grit from the coverings, it forms a thick sludge that slows the flow and lets weeds take root.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Brackets that have dropped or snapped
  • Dripping or leaking gutter joints
  • Water backing up from a hidden gutter
  • Leaves and moss blocking gutters

Parking in Force Green, as in most of London, takes a little planning: let us know about parking bays, permits or a driveway when you book.
