Frogmill homes and their roofs
With Harleyford Manor about 1 mile north-east, Frogmill sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
Take a building like Danesfield School: a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. For landlords with property near Henley-On-Thames station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Peter and St Paul, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

About our gutter survey in Frogmill
Most blocked gutters are full of leaves, moss or silt. Buildings near trees collect more, and moss washing off a tiled or slate roof adds to it. We note where gutters are clogged or holding water, which outlets and hoppers are choked and whether any overflows are doing their job. The photos show you exactly what we found. It is an easy job to put off but it rarely improves. If you are worried about water spilling over the gutter edge and brackets that have dropped or snapped, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on eaves gutters, outlets and hoppers and fascias and soffits alike.
Village roofs frequently face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are frequently where weather gets in first.
What you get is a clear record of the gutter on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, for instance when you want to check whether anything has changed.

How the survey works
We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the roof space if there’s safe access. All told, expect between one and two hours on an ordinary house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. In a hamlet or village like Frogmill, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We agree which parts of the building you are most worried about.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
How to prepare
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Your questions about gutter surveys in Frogmill
Is my home in Frogmill listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Henley-On-Thames station?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. You can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and what you need.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is frequently shared, so we need permission from the freeholder or managing agent. We can only inspect what we’re given access to.
Do you use drones?
Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.
How quickly is the report sent?
That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.
Do you check valley and parapet gutters?
Yes, where it is safe to see them. We use the ground, windows, the loft space and the roof where it is safe and a drone where it applies.
Do you test soffits or gutters for asbestos?
No. We don’t test for asbestos. If rainwater goods or soffits look like they could contain asbestos, we note it and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.

Tips from our surveys
You don’t need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:
- Have overhanging branches cut back
- Note any damp stains below the gutters
- Watch ceilings under valley gutters for fresh marks
- Check from ground level or a window, not a ladder
You receive a photo-illustrated written report and clear written recommendations. You can pass it to whoever you choose to do the work so they can see exactly what’s needed.
Watch your gutters from ground level or a window during heavy rain. Water spilling over the edge or out of a joint is a sign that something needs attention before damage builds up.

What else we do in Frogmill
Leave it or get it looked at?
Water spilling from a gutter runs down and soaks the wall below. Given time, it can cause damp patches, damaged pointing and rot in nearby timber. Spotting the problem early tends to mean a simpler fix. In a small place like Frogmill, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
There are three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you need to know.
