FAQs for Jevington

Will you come out to Jevington?

Yes. Jevington is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Is the coastal weather around Jevington hard on roofs?

Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there is more wind, and more salt in the air. Ridges, verges, flashings and fixings are where it typically shows.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it is applicable. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

How much is a gutter survey?

Prices start from £150, including VAT. The price depends on the size of the building and how easy the gutters are to see. To get a price, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Does the report include photographs?

Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, which makes the report easy to follow.

Will you check if gutters are causing damp inside?

We check whether rainwater from the gutters is reaching the wall from overflows, leaking joints or loose downpipes. We can’t see inside the wall itself, so we report on what’s visible.

How do I book a survey in Jevington?

Simply phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.

How a gutter survey works in Jevington

Gutters are typically fixed to fascia boards, so fascias and soffits are part of the survey. Long-term overflowing can soften and rot timber boards and stain the soffits below. Older buildings, from before 2000, can have asbestos cement soffits, gutters or downpipes. We don’t carry out asbestos testing, so we flag anything that might contain it for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check. Common reasons to book are leaks at the gutter joints and gutters packed with leaves or moss, on parapet and box gutters, downpipes and valley gutters.

Somewhere as small as Jevington, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are frequently old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.

Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, along with how urgent it is.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Jevington

Going up a ladder to check your own gutters carries real risk. You can see drips and overflows from ground level, but valleys, parapets and box gutters are hard to see. Our survey covers what can be seen safely and records it with photos. Outbuildings and barns around Jevington are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT.

Why book with us

  • Drone and thermal imaging surveys available
  • An independent view of the roof
  • PI and public liability insurance
  • Customer satisfaction of 98%

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget, with the most urgent items set out first.

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work around your tenants.

How we price gutter surveys

All our prices include VAT. The things that change the price are:

  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
  • Whether it is a home or a commercial building

Our price is from £150, including VAT. The final price depends on how big and how high the roof is, access and which survey you book.

What to tell us when you get in touch

A little information up front helps. It is useful to include:

  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • Anything about access we should know
  • Dates you are working to, such as exchange
  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window

Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To find a date that works for you, call 07833 053749 or email us.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

It’s useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

What a gutter survey doesn’t cover

This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Parts of gutters that cannot be seen safely
  • The inside of buried drains
  • Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll point you to the right survey. What our survey covers.

What we look at

  • Valley gutters
  • Fascias and soffits
  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Eaves gutters
  • Outlets and hoppers
  • Downpipes

What a gutter survey looks like in Jevington

Jevington lies within about 3 miles of the sea, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. About 2.7 miles west lies Alfriston Clergy House, a reminder of how long the area around Jevington has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

If you let a flat or house near Polegate station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. Anyone responsible for a site like Willingdon Community School will know that its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. If you live in an older home near The Parish Church of St Andrew, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.

The survey, step by step

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes between one and two hours for a house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Cottages and farmhouses around Jevington often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen.

  1. We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.
  2. We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground.
  3. We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
  4. Where it’s safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
  5. A written report with photos and recommendations follows.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Tell us where we can park nearby
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
