Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Old Heath
Damp patches on inside walls, stains below a valley or water running down the brickwork can often be traced to the gutters. We check whether gutters, outlets or downpipes are the likely source, from whatever is safely visible. Where the cause looks more like the roof covering or a flashing, the report says so. The next step is suggested too. If you’re worried about brackets that have dropped or snapped and hoppers and outlets full of debris, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
In a smaller place like Old Heath, homes range from older cottages to bungalows and newer houses. Coverings range from slate and clay tiles on older homes to concrete tiles on many later ones. Chimneys, valleys and gutters on older homes often need the most attention, and the fixings under the coverings matter too. The fixings under an older roof frequently fail before good slates or tiles do.
We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, and where it can wait, that’s said too.

Old Heath questions
Do you cover smaller places like Old Heath?
Yes, we do. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Do roofs near the sea, like those around Old Heath, take more of a battering?
Near the coast, roofs face more wind and more salt than further inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, while strong wind lifts anything already loose.
What happens next?
The report comes by email, and what you do next is up to you: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.
Are you structural engineers?
No. We note visible signs like sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.
Do I need to be at home?
That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access; we’ll agree the details as you book.
Are hidden gutters like valleys and box gutters included?
Yes. Hidden gutters are a common cause of leaks inside so we pay close attention to them. Some may only be partly visible, and we’ll note that in the report.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where applicable and safe. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.
What you can safely check yourself
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Gutter surveys around Old Heath
Old Heath is within about 4 miles of the coast, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces. Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.
If you live near a park such as Wivenhoe Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near St Barnabas, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.
Old Heath is about 1 mile south of Greenstead, in Essex. Old Heath gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful inspection, photographs and a written report. Old Heath is one of the places in Essex where we work. You can also see our page for Chelmsford.

What we look for on each type of roof
Fascias and soffits
Overflowing water stains soffits and rots timber. They’re looked at as part of the survey.
Cast iron gutters
A good many period homes still have cast iron rainwater goods. They last well when painted but corrode once the paint wears off.
What we can’t see
We only report whatever is safely visible on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Blockages deep inside downpipes
- Asbestos testing of old gutters, downpipes or soffits
- The inside of buried drains
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll point you to the right survey. The full list of what we check.
What we check
- Outlets and hoppers
- Downpipes
- Parapet and box gutters
- Fascias and soffits
- Valley gutters
- Eaves gutters
Why get it checked now?
Going up a ladder to check your own gutters carries real risk. From the ground you can spot drips and overflows but hidden gutters are another matter. We inspect as far as it is safe to see and put it in writing. Tradespeople may need to travel further to a smaller place like Old Heath, so it helps to plan roof work rather than call someone out in a hurry. Knowing early gives you time to get the right people in.
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.

What we do, step by step
Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Some parts of a survey depend on the weather, so a visit to Old Heath is booked with the forecast in mind: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from ground level and the loft can go ahead in most weather.
- We ask about overflows, damp or leaks you’ve noticed.
- Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
- Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can safely be seen.
- We look in the loft space, where there’s safe access, for signs of water getting in.
- The findings are written up with photographs and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

Signs you need a gutter survey in Old Heath
Leaves are behind most blocked gutters. Nearby trees drop leaves, twigs and seeds into gutters every autumn and the debris builds up at the outlets. Once an outlet is choked, the gutter fills and overflows.
Common reasons to book include:
- Choked outlets or hopper heads
- Overflowing valley or parapet gutters
- Soffits marked by water
- Leaves and moss blocking gutters
If you run a business near Lion Walk, a written record of the roof’s condition helps you plan maintenance rather than react to leaks.
