Gutter surveys in Slough: local notes

Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them. About 2.1 miles south lies Windsor Castle, a reminder of how long the area around Slough has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

Trees in and around Herschel Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters. Anyone responsible for a site like Herschel Grammar School will know that large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

Slough is about 22 miles west of London. Slough gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful inspection, photographs and a written report. Our area takes in places right across the surrounding area. For surveys nearby, see our Reading page.

Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Slough

People book a gutter survey when gutters overflow, when damp appears or before the wetter months. Landlords and managing agents use the report to plan upkeep and buyers sometimes want the gutters looked at before they exchange. The survey and report follow the same steps whatever the reason, with photos and written recommendations. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. If you’re worried about joints that drip after rain and valley or box gutters that overflow inside, we can find out what’s behind it.

Trees in streets, gardens and parks drop leaves into gutters across places like Slough, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. Valley and parapet gutters can overflow inside the building. It is one reason a roof is worth looking at as a whole, not just the obvious problem. Gutters, outlets and downpipes are worth checking once the leaves have fallen.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

How the survey works

We will ask a few questions first, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes about 1–2 hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. For a commercial building or block in Slough, roof access is agreed with whoever manages it before the visit. For homes, clear the way to the loft hatch and let us know about any leaks you know of. The written report follows, with photos.

  1. First, we agree the areas to focus on.
  2. Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
  3. Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
  4. We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
  5. You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Check pets are kept safely away
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed

Leave it or get it looked at?

It’s easy to put damp down to the wrong cause. When rainwater goods are the source, treating the wall alone won’t solve it. Checking the gutters first helps you spend in the right place. In a busy place like Slough, water from a failed roof can run through a building before anyone spots it, soaking insulation, ceilings and whatever is below. Catching it early keeps the damage down.

When to book a survey in Slough

Falling leaves are the most common cause of blocked gutters. Every autumn, trees fill gutters with leaves, twigs and seeds and the debris builds up at the outlets. A choked outlet soon means a full, overflowing gutter.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Overflowing eaves gutters
  • Gutters that have fallen out of line
  • Downpipes that are split or coming away
  • Hoppers and outlets full of debris

If you let a flat or house near Slough station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let.

What to check before booking

  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
  • What exactly goes into their report
  • Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs

What a roof survey includes

Different roofs, different checks

Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters

Some older roofs have a central valley running to the back, and a blockage there can overflow inside. We check it where it is safe to see.

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

Many homes have plastic gutters and downpipes. Their joints can leak as the seals wear and brackets may drop under the weight of debris.

FAQs for Slough

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Slough?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Slough?

Yes, Slough is within the area we cover. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know about the property, and we will talk through which survey suits.

What’s the best way to book?

To arrange a survey, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us the address and what you want to find out. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.

What happens after the survey?

You’ll receive the report by email, and what you do next is up to you: raise it with a seller, send it to an insurer, brief a roofer or share it with a managing agent.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.

Are hidden gutters like valleys and box gutters included?

Yes. These gutters frequently cause leaks indoors when they block so we pay close attention to them. Some may only be partly visible, and the report says so.

Before and after the survey

Small things make a difference. Our tips:

  • Include valley, parapet and box gutters when clearing
  • Look out for overflows when it pours
  • Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
  • Do not climb a ladder to look in the gutters

Landlords and managing agents can keep the report with the building’s records to help plan maintenance. Photos make it easier to explain the work to owners, tenants or contractors.

Hidden gutters need clearing too. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but they’re much harder to spot, so check they’re included in any clearing work.

DIY checks: what’s safe

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.

It helps to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Share it with us as you book, as it helps us focus the survey.
