About our gutter survey in Trotton Marsh

Most blocked gutters are full of leaves, moss or silt. Homes close to trees fill their gutters faster, and moss washing off a tiled or slate roof adds to it. Our survey shows which gutters are blocked or standing full, which outlets and hoppers are choked and whether any overflows are doing their job. The photographs show you exactly what we found. It’s an easy job to put off but it rarely improves. Common reasons to book are leaking or loose downpipes and sagging gutters and loose brackets, across eaves gutters, outlets and hoppers and downpipes.

In a small place like Trotton Marsh, many roofs stand in the open, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are frequently the first to give way.

Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, with a note and a photo for each point. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

How the survey works

Before we start, let us know why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. That way we can focus on what matters to you. Most visits take between one and two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Older roofs in small places like Trotton Marsh can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
  2. Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
  3. Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
  4. We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
  5. You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.

Tips that help

Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. A few suggestions:

  • Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
  • Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
  • Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
  • Watch for green marks down the brickwork

Report times depend on the package you choose: within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. It’s sent to you by email as soon as it’s ready.

Do not forget valley, parapet and box gutters. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but they’re much harder to spot, so check they’re included in any clearing work.

Gutter surveys in Trotton Marsh: local notes

Cowdray House, about 4.2 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Trotton Marsh. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.

Checking the roof from the ground

It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

FAQs for Trotton Marsh

Is Trotton Marsh within the area you cover?

Yes, Trotton Marsh is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

Is my home in Trotton Marsh listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

How many surveys have you done?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.

Are you insured?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.

What happens after the survey?

The report comes by email, and what you do next is up to you: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Yes, where it is applicable. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.

Signs you need a gutter survey in Trotton Marsh

Some gutters may be too small, or have too few downpipes, for the roof they serve. An extension or extra roof slope can add water to an existing gutter and the weakness shows in a heavy downpour.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Overflowing valley or parapet gutters
  • Dripping or leaking gutter joints
  • Cracked or loose downpipes
  • Gutters that have fallen out of line

Landlords with a home close to Liphook station may find that the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
  • When you’ll get the report
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • Whether the price includes VAT

What to expect from a roof survey

What happens if roof problems are left?

A blocked valley or parapet gutter does not spill harmlessly. It can back up into the roof space and the rooms below, often in the heaviest rain. It is worth having these gutters looked at before the wetter months. In a small place like Trotton Marsh, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Why us?

  • Two decades and more of roof surveys
  • Thermal imaging and drone inspection where they help
  • Surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays
