Gutter survey in Wickford: what you get
Most blocked gutters are full of leaves, moss or silt. Homes close to trees fill their gutters faster and moss from the roof slopes makes it worse. We note where gutters are clogged or holding water, which outlets and hoppers are choked and whether overflows are working. The photographs show you exactly what we found. Blocked gutters are easy to put off, but they rarely get better. We survey valley gutters, downpipes and fascias and soffits, and the problems we are asked to look at most are blocked outlets and hoppers and gutters overflowing in heavy rain.
Most homes in a town like Wickford are houses, so the roof is typically the owner’s to look after. A slipped tile or blocked gutter costs far less to sort than the damp it causes later. A roof report gives you a list of what needs doing and how soon, whether you live in the house or let it. The photos let you see the parts of the roof you can’t get to.
We keep jargon out of it: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

Your questions about gutter surveys in Wickford
Is my home in Wickford listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Wickford station?
Yes, landlords and agents book with us as well as owners. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and tell us about the building.
Is a Saturday or Sunday visit possible?
Yes. Surveys are carried out on any day of the week. To find a day that suits, phone 07833 053749 or email us.
How many surveys have you done?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We’re roof surveyors, not structural engineers, and it doesn’t include calculations. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
How fast do I get the report?
Each package has its own report time. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. If you have a deadline, like an exchange date, let us know as you book.
Will you check the drains below ground?
No. We check above-ground rainwater only down to where the downpipes reach the ground. Where a below-ground drain seems to be the problem, we will tell you.
What a survey costs
Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before you book. This is what makes a difference:
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- Which survey package you book
- The roof’s overall size
- The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.
What to tell us when you get in touch
We will typically ask about:
- Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
- The property’s address and postcode
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
- What’s prompted the survey
If you are buying, it helps to book soon after your offer is accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. Otherwise, simply call 07833 053749 or send us an email whenever suits you.

What else we do in Wickford
Leave it or get it looked at?
Going up a ladder to check your own gutters carries real risk. From ground level you can spot drips and overflows but hidden gutters are another matter. Our survey covers whatever is safely visible and records it with photos. Around Wickford, gutters that overflow soak the wall below. A slipped tile or worn flashing does the same higher up. Left alone, both only get worse.
Our price is from £150, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, including VAT, and we can help you choose.

Gutter surveys in Wickford: local notes
Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, and lots of post-war and modern estates besides. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand, ideally before any re-roofing is planned.
Take an older house close to St Andrew: its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Oakfield Primary School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time.

Common roof problems in Wickford
Some gutters may be too small, or have too few downpipes, for the roof they serve. An extension or extra roof slope can add water to an existing gutter and the weakness shows in a heavy downpour.
People typically book a survey when they’ve noticed one of these:
- Gutters full of debris and silt
- Hoppers and outlets full of debris
- Cracked or loose downpipes
- Water spilling over the gutter edge
Landlords with a home close to Wickford station may find that a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let.
Before you book anyone
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- Their insurance cover
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
What a gutter survey does not cover
To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:
- Asbestos testing of old gutters, downpipes or soffits
- What’s hidden inside a downpipe
- Hidden sections we cannot view safely
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.
What we check
- Outlets and hoppers
- Fascias and soffits
- Valley gutters
- Parapet and box gutters
- Downpipes
- Eaves gutters
How it works
The visit has one job: to see as much of the gutter as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit usually takes about 1–2 hours at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. For a home in Wickford, the main things we need are a way into the loft, a route to the back garden and somewhere to park. Someone needs to let us in, so let us know who that will be.
- We start by hearing about any drips, overflows or damp patches.
- Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
- Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can safely be seen.
- The roof space is checked for water marks if it’s safe to get into.
- The findings are written up with photographs and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Check pets are kept safely away
