- Damp timbers or stains in the loft
Pre-purchase roof surveys for homes and businesses in Strand-on-the-Green
With a written roof report, you can go back to the seller or agent with specifics. You might ask about past repairs, ask for work to be done before completion or think again about your offer. What the seller agrees to is up to them, but you will be negotiating from a clear picture rather than a hunch. It also helps you decide whether to go ahead at all. We survey lead flashings and valleys, the roof space and chimney stacks, and people most often book us about loose pots and cracked flaunching and a ridge or slope that dips.
London’s housing runs from Victorian and Edwardian terraces to interwar semis, post-war estates and new blocks of flats, so a property in Strand-on-the-Green might be any of these. Whether you are buying or have just had a roof replaced, the details that cause trouble depend on the age of the building. Slates, hidden valley gutters, parapets and flat roofs over back additions all need checking in their own way.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What we do, step by step
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes about one to two hours at the house you’re buying, depending on its size and how much of the roof can be seen. In Strand-on-the-Green, as in much of London, a good many properties are flats or terraces without side access, so the back of the roof is often seen from upstairs windows, from inside or, where a flight is allowed, from the air. If the building has a managing agent or access rules, let us know when you book.
- After your offer is agreed, you book and share your timetable.
- Access to the house and the roof space is agreed ahead of time.
- We start outside, looking at the roof from ground level and from vantage points.
- We then look from upstairs windows and inside the loft where it’s safe.
- The report is emailed with photos and recommendations, ready to use before exchange.
Before the survey
- If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Check pets are kept safely away

FAQs for Strand-on-the-Green
Is drone flying allowed in Strand-on-the-Green?
Normally it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying, though the rest of the survey goes ahead either way.
Is parking a problem for a survey in Strand-on-the-Green?
Sometimes, yes. If Strand-on-the-Green has controlled parking where you are, a visitor permit is the easiest answer.
Do you cover Strand-on-the-Green for pre-purchase roof surveys?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and that includes Strand-on-the-Green.
Will you need to get into the loft?
Where we can, yes. From the roof space we can see staining, timbers and underlay. If we can’t get in, the report says so.
Does the weather affect the survey?
It can, depending on the survey. Drone flights need calm, dry weather, and thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof and little wind. If the conditions are not right, we will talk to you about another date.
When is the best time to have the roof checked when buying?
Book as soon as your offer is agreed. You need the report before you exchange, while you can still ask questions and negotiate.
Do I need to be at home?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
DIY checks: what’s safe
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in.
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
For landlords and managing agents
For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant, which helps with budgets and planning.
Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on, photographs included.
Honest limits
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:
- Faults hidden behind ceilings, boards or coverings
- A structural engineer’s report
- Asbestos testing of any kind
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.
What we look at
- Gutters and downpipes
- Lead flashings and valleys
- The roof space
- Flat-roofed extensions and dormers
- Clay and concrete tiles
- Natural slate
- Chimney stacks
What happens if roof problems are left?
A seller may honestly not know the state of the roof. The forms they complete only show what they’re aware of. Our survey shows you the roof as it is today. In Strand-on-the-Green, as across London, an overflowing gutter soaks the wall below. A small blockage left for a few winters becomes a damp problem.
Prices start from £150, including VAT. The final price depends on how big and how high the roof is, how it can be seen safely and which survey you book.
Why us?
- Photos and a written report every time
- CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID)
- Insured for professional indemnity and public liability

Buying a home or a new roof in Strand-on-the-Green
About 0.7 miles west lies Kew Palace, a reminder of how long the area around Strand-on-the-Green has been built on. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. In outer London, interwar semis with hipped, tiled roofs sit alongside older slate-roofed terraces. On a semi of that age, the small roofs over the bays, the hip tiles and any later dormer each need their own look. Whether you are buying or checking new roofing work, knowing the materials helps make sense of what the inspection finds.
As a London address, Strand-on-the-Green can be tricky for parking: tell us about permits, visitor bays or off-street space as you book. For landlords with property near Chiswick station, it is worth knowing a roof’s condition before you buy it, or before you sign off new roofing work on it. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near St Paul's Church, the roof’s history matters as much as its looks, and a survey brings the past repairs to light.
