Roof survey in Strand-on-the-Green

We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from ground level, from windows and other vantage points, from inside the loft and from the roof itself where it is safe. Premium adds thermal imaging, plus a drone inspection where it applies, which helps with tall or steep roofs. You do not need to do anything except give us access. Everything we see is photographed for the report. If you’re worried about valley linings that have cracked or split and worn lead at chimneys and abutments, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

Many London terraces have a butterfly roof, with two slopes meeting in a central valley gutter that drains to the rear. From the street you see only a parapet wall, so blocked outlets and split linings go unnoticed until water comes through a ceiling. For a house in Strand-on-the-Green with this kind of roof, the hidden gutter is one of the first things to check.

Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Strand-on-the-Green: your questions answered

I let a flat near Chiswick station. Can you check the roof?

Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. You can call 07833 053749 or email us with the address and what you need.

Are there drone restrictions around Strand-on-the-Green?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying, and the rest of the survey does not depend on the drone.

Do you look in the roof space?

Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement.

What do you check on a roof survey?

Every part of the roof we can safely see: the slates or tiles, ridges, valleys, flashings, chimneys, gutters and roof space. Higher packages add moisture detection, structural checks, thermal imaging and a drone where applicable.

Is a roof survey the same as a structural survey?

No. We report on the roof’s condition, and Standard and Premium include structural checks. It isn’t a structural engineer’s report and doesn’t include calculations.

How soon is the report ready?

The Premium Survey has a same-day report, Standard 24 to 48 hours and Basic within 48 hours. Photos are included.

Can you survey a roof I share with a neighbour?

Yes, the part you own or can give access to. Next door’s roof is only inspected as far as we can see it. Shared stacks and upstands are looked at from your property.

What this survey cannot tell you

Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:

  • The condition of the rest of the building (that’s a RICS home survey)
  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
  • Defects hidden under coverings or inside walls without opening up

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • The roof space
  • Flat roofs
  • Ridges, hips and valleys
  • Natural slate
  • Clay and concrete tiles
  • Lead flashings
  • Chimney stacks

What a survey costs

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:

  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • How big the roof is
  • The shape of the roof and its details

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.

Getting in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • What made you get in touch
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block

What happens on the day

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. You are welcome to ask questions while we are there. Surveys in Strand-on-the-Green can be booked for any day of the week. It helps if you can point us to a visitor permit or a nearby bay. Upstairs rooms at the back are useful too, as they often give the best view of a rear addition.

  1. You pick the package that suits your roof.
  2. We arrive at the agreed time and talk through any concerns.
  3. We inspect and photograph every part of the roof we can safely see.
  4. Extra checks are carried out where your package includes them.
  5. The report is emailed with findings and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

Roof by roof

Concrete interlocking tiles

Interlocking tiles on shallow roofs depend on their laps and fixings. Lifted or cracked tiles are noted, particularly at the verges and ridge.

Chimney stacks

Damp on a chimney breast inside often starts with the stack outside. We look for the likely route in.

Why get it checked now?

Valley gutters and parapet gutters are out of sight until they overflow. An overflow there sends water indoors. We look at them before they cause trouble. In Strand-on-the-Green, as in much of London, water from a roof defect can reach a neighbour’s home as easily as yours: failed flashings and blocked valley gutters can send water into more than one home. Finding it early keeps the work smaller.

Prices start from £150, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, including VAT, and we can help you choose.

What a roof survey looks like in Strand-on-the-Green

Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Outer London has a good many Victorian and Edwardian terraces with slate roofs, but also a great many interwar semis, often with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles. Hips, bay roofs and later loft conversions are typical of those semis, if your home is one of them. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.

Shop and office owners around Livat Hammersmith may find that a dated report on the roof is useful for planning and for any lease discussions. The streets around a church such as St Paul's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. Anyone responsible for a site like Strand-on-the-Green Infant and Nursery School will know that long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.

  • Keep a record of damp patches and dates
  • Hold on to the report for future surveys
  • Ask about a flat roof on an extension or garage too

After a storm, check the roof from the garden and the street. Slipped slates, lifted ridge tiles or pieces in the garden are signs something has moved. Getting small faults fixed quickly keeps water out.
