Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Ashburton
In outer London, interwar semis with hipped, tiled roofs sit alongside older slate-roofed terraces. If your home in Ashburton is one of them, bay roofs, hips and later dormers each have their own details. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Whitgift Centre, knowing the roof’s condition lets you budget for work rather than pay for emergencies. If you live near a park such as Ashburton Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.

Roof survey in Ashburton: what you get
We survey roofs in Ashburton and across London and South East England. We carry out surveys on weekdays and at weekends. We’re insured for professional indemnity and public liability. You get a written report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. Houses, flats and commercial buildings all follow the same careful process. When you are ready to book, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form. We survey chimney stacks, flat roofs and ridges, hips and valleys, and common reasons people get in touch are loose chimney pots and condensation or damp timbers in the loft.
London has a great many flats in converted houses and purpose-built blocks, where the roof is normally a shared part of the building. Whoever looks after the building needs a clear picture of the roof, chimneys and gutters, in Ashburton as anywhere. A defect on a shared roof can reach more than one flat. A report gives everyone the same picture to plan from, with photos.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

Common roof problems in Ashburton
What’s under the slates or tiles is as important as the coverings themselves. Breathable roofing membranes came into use in the UK in the late 1990s, so many older roofs have bitumen felt underlay, and some very old roofs have no underlay at all. Felt that has torn or perished stops doing its job.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Loose chimney pots
- Water stains on rafters and ceiling joists
- Debris building up in roof valleys
- Gutters that overflow in heavy rain
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as St Thomas Becket Catholic Primary School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.

Prices for roof surveys in Ashburton
Several things affect the price of a survey:
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before booking.
What we need to know
Getting the details right at the start saves time. Please include:
- The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
- Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
- Dates you are working to, such as exchange
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
Every survey is priced before it’s booked, so you know the cost up front. Roof survey starts from £150, including VAT. To book, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.
Different roofs, different checks
Natural slate
Slate is one of the most durable roof coverings, but its nails often corrode first. We check for slipped, cracked and missing slates, and for clips that show past repairs.
Flat roof coverings
A felt roof frequently lasts around 15 to 20 years, while EPDM rubber often lasts 30 to 50 years and GRP up to about 30. We look at how the covering is wearing.
Why act early in Ashburton
Leaving it means relying on what you can see from the ground. That can lead to the wrong work being done, or miss the fault that matters. We tell you what’s really needed. Any roof job in Ashburton means planning around parking, neighbours and access. Knowing what’s needed early gives you time to plan it calmly.
Prices start from £150, inc. VAT, for a Basic Survey. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both with VAT included. You’ll know the price for the job before booking.

Your questions about roof surveys in Ashburton
Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Ashburton?
Sometimes, yes. If Ashburton has controlled parking where you are, a visitor permit is the easiest answer, and a driveway is even better.
Are there drone restrictions around Ashburton?
Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather, and the rest of the survey does not depend on the drone.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years, and 98% of clients are satisfied.
How do I book a survey in Ashburton?
It’s easiest to phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. Tell us the address and a little about the roof, and we’ll take it from there. We survey seven days a week.
When will the report arrive?
It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard within 24 to 48 hours and Premium the same day. We send it by email.
Are you insured?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
Will you check the loft?
If the survey needs it and the roof space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.
How the survey works
Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit typically takes about one to two hours for a house, and more on a big or complicated roof. In converted houses and mansion blocks, the loft hatch is frequently on a shared landing. Where that’s the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.
- We start with the property details and any concerns.
- We agree a date, including weekends if that suits you.
- Outside, we inspect from ground level, windows and other safe vantage points, and from the roof where safe.
- We then look in the loft for damp, staining and the condition of the underlay.
- You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.
Getting ready for the survey
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we are coming

DIY checks: what’s safe
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
