Independent roof surveys in Chidham

Roof surveys for homes and businesses in Chidham

Our report is written in plain English, not jargon. Each defect is described with photographs and a recommendation, and where it’s relevant we say what’s urgent and what can wait. With the Standard Survey you also get moisture detection and a structural check. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, a drone where it applies and a same-day report. Reports are sent by email. We survey flat roofs, the roof space and ridges, hips and valleys, and the problems we are asked to look at most are loose chimney pots and gaps in the roof where coverings have gone.

In a small place like Chidham, many roofs stand in the open, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.

We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photographs show what each point refers to, and recommendations are put in order of urgency where relevant.

The survey, step by step

We don’t take risks to get a closer look. We inspect whatever is safely visible, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. The survey usually takes about 1–2 hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. Around Chidham, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. You get in touch with the address and anything you’ve noticed.
  2. We arrange a day that suits you, including weekends.
  3. We inspect from ground level, from windows, from the loft space and from the roof where safe.
  4. Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all examined and photographed.
  5. We email a photo-illustrated written report and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors

Booking a survey

Photos help, if you have them. Take them safely from ground level or a window; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Leaving it means relying on what you can see from ground level. That can lead to the wrong work being done, or to a real problem being missed. A survey tells you what actually needs attention. In a small place like Chidham, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

To find out what your survey will cost, call 07833 053749 or email us and tell us about the roof. We’ll confirm the figure before booking.

What we’re asked to look at in Chidham

Slates and tiles frequently outlast the fixings that hold them. ‘Nail fatigue’ is common on slate roofs: the nails rust and the slates slide. On tiled roofs, battens and pegs can rot, letting tiles move.

Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed one of these:

  • Ridge tiles that have lifted or moved
  • Leaning or weathered chimney stacks
  • Standing water on a flat roof
  • Worn lead at chimneys and abutments

If you look after a building such as Chidham Parochial Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

What a roof survey includes

Roof surveys around Chidham

Chidham is within about 2 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

For an older house near a landmark such as The Parish Church of St Mary, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine. If you own a rental within reach of Nutbourne station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.

Chidham is about 4 miles west of Chichester, in West Sussex. Wherever you are in Chidham, we can carry out roof surveys at your property. Across West Sussex, we cover Chidham. There’s also a page for Portsmouth.

Roof surveys in PO18 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If you need a roof survey at a property on Chidham Lane, Harbour Way and Cot Lane or anywhere close by, we can survey it. We also cover Nutbourne (1 mile north-west), Bosham (1 mile east), Broadbridge (1 mile east), Hambrook (1 mile north) and Bosham Hoe (2 miles south-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Bognor Regis (9 miles east), Chichester (4 miles east), Selsey (8 miles south-east), Littlehampton (15 miles east), Emsworth (3 miles north-west) and Portfield (5 miles east).

Questions from Chidham

Is the coastal weather around Chidham hard on roofs?

Generally, yes: wind and salt air take more of a toll near the sea. Ridges, verges, flashings and fixings are where it normally shows.

How do I find out if my home in Chidham is listed?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, once access has been agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so the building owner or managing agent needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we are given access to.

Do you use drones?

Yes, where it is applicable. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

How long does a roof survey take?

Allow about 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. We will give you an idea of timing when booking.

Does a roof survey replace a structural engineer?

No. Our survey looks at the condition of the roof, and Standard and Premium include structural checks. It isn’t a structural engineer’s report and doesn’t include calculations.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos testing is not part of our service. Where materials might contain it, we say so in the report so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check before any work.

How we price roof surveys

To price your survey, we check:

  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • How big the roof is
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see

Roof survey starts from £150, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, access and which survey you book.

What to tell us when you contact us

To price your survey accurately, we will ask about:

  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • What made you get in touch
  • Your timetable, like an exchange date
  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window

Our phone lines are open seven days a week. For a price or to book, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

How the survey changes by roof type

Lead flashings and valleys

Lead flashings seal chimneys, walls and abutments. We check for lead that has lifted, split or slipped.

Flat roof coverings

Ponding, blistering, splits and cracked surfaces are the common warning signs. We also look at the edges, upstands and outlets.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we check the roof.
