Roof surveys for homes and businesses in St Margarets

Everything we check, we check safely: from ground level, from windows, from the loft space and from the roof where conditions allow. Premium adds thermal imaging, plus a drone inspection where it applies, which helps with tall or steep roofs. All we need from you is access to the property and the loft. Each defect we find is photographed and explained. We survey natural slate, the roof space and flat roofs, and people most often book us about gutters that overflow in heavy rain and condensation or damp timbers in the loft.

Many London terraces have a butterfly roof, with two slopes meeting in a central valley gutter that drains to the rear. From the street you see only a parapet wall, so blocked outlets and split linings go unnoticed until water comes through a ceiling. For a house in St Margarets with this kind of roof, the hidden gutter is one of the first things to check.

After the visit, you get a report with photographs, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

The survey, step by step

Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. The whole visit typically takes about 1–2 hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. In St Margarets, visits are available on weekdays and at weekends. London parking is frequently by permit or pay-and-display, so it helps to know what’s near you, and to clear a path to the loft hatch. Upstairs rooms at the back are useful too, as they frequently give the best view of a rear addition.

  1. You pick the package that suits your roof.
  2. On the day, we start by hearing what you’ve noticed.
  3. Coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are inspected and photographed.
  4. Extra checks are carried out where your package includes them.
  5. The report is emailed with findings and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared

Roof surveys around St Margarets

Outer London has plenty of Victorian and Edwardian terraces with slate roofs, but also a great many interwar semis, frequently with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles. Bay roofs, hip ridges and dormers from later loft conversions are the details that set these houses apart. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them. St Margarets is about 2 miles from the edge of the flight restriction zone around Heathrow Airport. If your survey includes the drone, the exact boundary is checked for the address first.

If you live near a park like Richmond Green, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys. If you own a rental within reach of St Margarets (London) station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant. Shop and office owners around Treaty Centre may find that a written record of the roof’s condition helps you plan maintenance rather than react to leaks.

Common questions in St Margarets

Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in St Margarets?

Normally it’s manageable with a little notice. Let us know the parking rules on your street and we’ll work around them.

Can a landlord with a rental near St Margarets (London) station book a roof survey?

Yes, that’s a common request. Let us know whether a tenant or an agent will let us in, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.

What if it rains on the day?

Some surveys depend on the weather more than others. Drones can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with a dry roof, little wind and a sunny day beforehand. We’ll rearrange with you if the weather isn’t right.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos testing isn’t part of our service. Where materials might contain it, we say so in the report and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

How soon is the report ready?

That depends on which survey you choose: Basic within 48 hours, Standard within 24 to 48 hours and Premium the same day. It is emailed to you.

What’s the best way to book?

Simply call 07833 053749 or drop us an email. We’ll ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date, weekday or weekend.

Can you survey a roof I share with a neighbour?

Yes, we inspect your part of the roof. Next door’s roof is only inspected as far as we can see it. Shared chimneys and party-wall upstands are checked from your side.

Honest limits

Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Confirmation of asbestos in soffits or cement sheets

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Roofs we survey in St Margarets

  • Natural slate
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs
  • Clay and concrete tiles
  • Lead flashings
  • The roof space
  • Ridges, hips and valleys

Before and after the survey

There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:

  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Leave roof access to professionals
  • Have details of recent roof work to hand
  • Watch for slipped slates after bad weather

If you need work done, the report gives roofers a clear brief. They’ll see each defect and its location, which makes quotes easier to compare.

After a storm, check the roof from the garden and the street. Slipped slates, lifted ridge tiles or pieces in the garden are signs something has moved. Prompt repairs stop small problems growing.

How we price roof surveys

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Prices start from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

What we need to know

What helps most when you contact us:

  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside

You can call us seven days a week. For a price or to book, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

How the survey changes by roof type

Flat roof coverings

Some flat roofs have been coated over several times. If the covering would need opening up to know more, we say so.

Natural slate

Natural slate can last 100 years or more, yet the nails holding it frequently fail long before the slate. We check for slipped, cracked and missing slates.

Checking the roof from ground level

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
