Roof survey in West Preston, West Sussex
A roof condition survey for homes and buildings across West Preston, using drones and thermal imaging where applicable. Call or email for a price.
- Slates or tiles that have slipped or broken
- Valley linings that have cracked or split
- Worn lead at chimneys and abutments
When you need someone else
It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:
- Whether materials contain asbestos (that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor)
- How the roof will behave in every kind of weather
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Roof survey in West Preston: what you get
Three packages cover most roofs: a Basic Survey from £150, a Standard Survey from £250 and a Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT. The Basic Survey gives a visual inspection, photographs and written recommendations. Standard and Premium go further, like moisture detection, a structural check, thermal imaging and a drone where it applies. Every package includes a written report. If you’ve noticed torn or sagging underlay and blocked, sagging or leaking gutters, we can find out what’s behind it, on chimney stacks, natural slate and clay and concrete tiles alike.
In a smaller place like West Preston, some roofs stand more exposed to wind and rain than in a built-up town. That weather tells first on ridges, verges, chimneys and flashings. A proper look shows whether anything has started to loosen. A loose ridge tile or slate gives the wind something to catch, and others soon follow.
We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, and where it can wait, that’s said too.

Roof by roof
Lead flashings and valleys
Lead flashings seal chimneys, walls and abutments. We check for lead that has lifted, split or slipped.
Chimney stacks
Water that gets into a stack can show as damp in the rooms below. We check the flashings and mortar for the cause.
Why act early in West Preston
Planned work is less stressful than an emergency. With a report, you can tackle the urgent jobs first and plan the rest, rather than calling someone out after a storm. On a bungalow or cottage around West Preston, the roof sits close to the rooms below, so a small leak can mark a ceiling within a few storms. Finding the cause first saves a second job inside.
Our price is from £150, including VAT. The final price depends on how big and how high the roof is, access and the package you choose.

How we price roof surveys
Several things affect the price of a survey:
- Which survey package you book
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We can help you choose the package that fits what you want to find out.
Getting in touch
We’ll typically ask about:
- The reason for the survey, like buying, a leak or storm damage
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- The property’s address and postcode
Our price is from £150, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, so call 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the details.
What happens on the day
Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photographs, sent to you by email. On timing, it usually takes about 1–2 hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. A visit to West Preston is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed beforehand. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.
- We help you choose a Basic, Standard or Premium Survey.
- We arrive at the agreed time and talk through any concerns.
- We inspect and photograph every part of the roof we can safely see.
- Moisture detection, a structural check, thermal imaging or a drone are added where your package includes them.
- You get a written report with photos and clear recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Advice
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
Local roofs in West Preston
West Preston is within about 1 mile of the coast, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles, while driving rain finds any gap. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.
Ecclesden Manor, about 1.6 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around West Preston. Older roofs nearby often mix original materials with later repairs, and the survey shows where each one is. For landlords with property near Angmering station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant. Living close to Mewsbrook Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn.
West Preston is about 4 miles west of Worthing, in West Sussex. Houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings in West Preston can all book roof surveys. Our West Sussex coverage includes West Preston and the places around it. For surveys nearby, see our Brighton page.

Within a short drive, we also cover Worthing (4 miles east), Bognor Regis (8 miles west), Chichester (13 miles west), Selsey (14 miles south-west), Shoreham-by-Sea (10 miles east) and Lancing (8 miles east).

FAQs for West Preston
Does a conservation area affect roof work in West Preston?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Is West Preston within the area you cover?
Yes. West Preston is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.
Is your survey a structural engineer’s report?
No. If we see signs that need an engineer, such as serious sagging, we’ll say so. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report.
How soon is the report ready?
That depends on which survey you choose: within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. We send it by email.
Does the weather affect the survey?
A survey can usually go ahead in light rain, and it can even help show where water is getting in. Heavy rain or strong wind can ground a drone and make the roof unsafe, so if conditions aren’t right we’ll arrange another day with you.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with the freeholder or managing agent. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the survey around it.
