Storm damage roof report in Egham Hythe

The Financial Ombudsman looks at three things when it considers a storm damage complaint: were there storm conditions on or around the date, is the damage consistent with a storm, and was the storm the main cause. We record what the roof shows about the damage and its likely cause. You or your insurer can check the weather for the date. Common reasons to book are stains appearing after strong winds and holes or cracks caused by debris, on chimney stacks, gutters and fascias and ridges and hips.

Around Egham Hythe, chimneys on older homes are a common source of leaks, at the flashings, the pointing or the mortar round the pots. Damp in a chimney breast can have more than one cause, so it isn’t always obvious where it starts. It’s worth looking at the stack from outside and at the timbers beside it in the loft.

The report records the roof as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, for example when you want to check whether anything has changed.

What this survey cannot tell you

It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:

  • Estimates of repair costs
  • How your policy defines a storm
  • Negotiating a claim settlement

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Flat roofs
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Ridges and hips
  • Flashings
  • Chimney stacks

How it works

A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take between one and two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. In a smaller place like Egham Hythe, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. The roof is inspected from safe positions.
  3. We record and photograph the damage.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Preparing for the visit

  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Check pets are kept safely away
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed

Advice

Leaks and storm damage in Egham Hythe

The wider area around Egham Hythe has a long history of building, with Botleys Mansion about 3.5 miles south. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Many older homes in Surrey have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.

Homes near green spaces such as Penton Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. Anyone responsible for a site like Thorpe Lea Primary School will know that tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.

FAQs for Egham Hythe

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Egham Hythe?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Do you cover smaller places like Egham Hythe?

Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it’s applicable. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the roof space, someone has to give us access; we’ll agree the details as you book.

Who handles emergency protection after a storm?

Emergency cover over a damaged roof should be arranged with a roofer. Take photos from the ground first if it’s safe. Keep receipts for any emergency work.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, if the building owner or managing agent agrees access. We look at the parts we’re given access to.

How long does the survey take?

That depends on the size and shape of the roof, but most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, or half a day or so for a commercial building. The written report follows by email.

Common roof problems in Egham Hythe

Landlords and managing agents book reports to keep a record for owners and insurers. The report can be shared with owners, tenants or insurers.

It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • Damaged gutters and fascias
  • New damp or leaks inside
  • Flashings pulled away from walls or stacks
  • Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls

Take an older house close to St Paul's Church: old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in.

What to check before booking

  • How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • How soon the report will arrive
  • Is VAT included in the price?
  • Which limits apply to the survey

What a roof survey includes

DIY checks: what’s safe

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

How we price storm damage roof reports

To price your survey, we look at:

  • Which survey package you book
  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages

Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.

Getting in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
  • Dates you are working to, such as exchange
  • The kind of building and roof involved

Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To find a date that works for you, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
