Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Guestling
Our storm damage report starts from £150. It’s a report with photos, sent by email. It isn’t a repair quote and doesn’t include repair costs, so ask a roofer to quote for the work. Your insurer may also send its own loss adjuster. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause. Common reasons to book are torn or lifted flat roof coverings and flashings pulled away from walls or stacks, across chimney stacks, slate and tile slopes and ridges and hips.
Many homes in small places like Guestling face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A record with photographs is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.
After the visit, you get a written report with photos, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

How the survey works
There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes about one to two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Older roofs in small places like Guestling can have low, tight loft spaces, so it is useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.
- You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
- Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
- The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it is safe.
- Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
- The report, with photos, is emailed to you.
Getting ready for the survey
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent

What a storm damage roof report does not cover
Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- A price for the repairs
- Acting for you with the insurer
- How your policy defines a storm
If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

DIY checks: what’s safe
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
We survey roofs for landlords and agents as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photographs, which helps you plan work between tenancies.
With a portfolio of properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To discuss a number of properties, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Roof by roof
Slate roofs
Natural slate can last 100 years or more, but the nails often fail first. The report records whether slipped slates look like storm damage or older wear.
Flat roof coverings
Branches and debris can damage flat roofs or block outlets. We record what we find.
Tips that help
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:
- Note the date and time you first saw the damage
- Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
- File receipts for anything you pay for
- Photograph the damage safely from below
If you’re unhappy with how your insurer handles the claim, you can complain to them first. After that, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Clear gutters and outlets before the stormy months. Overflowing gutters can make storm damage worse.

Guestling roofs and the weather
Guestling lies within about 2 miles of the sea. What counts as a storm is set by each policy, often gusts of around 55 mph, and the insurer makes the decision. In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs, and the county’s older buildings include oast houses and Wealden hall houses. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.
The streets around a church like St Laurence's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near Priory Meadow Shopping Centre, a leak can close part of a shop or office, so finding the cause quickly matters. If you look after a building like Guestling Bradshaw Church of England Primary School, a leak through a large roof is frequently found some distance from where the water shows inside.

Guestling questions
Will you come out to Guestling?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.
Does being near the coast affect roofs in Guestling?
Near the coast, roofs face more wind and more salt than further inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, while strong wind lifts anything already loose.
What’s the best way to book?
Just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.
How many surveys have you done?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
Do I need to be at home?
Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access when you book.
Can I check the roof after a storm?
Only from ground level or from windows. Never climb onto a roof after a storm. With binoculars, you can see a lot from the ground, and we will record the rest.
How long will you be at the property?
It typically takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. We will confirm the timing as you book.
