How a storm damage roof report works in South Park

What counts as a storm depends on your policy, though many use gusts of about 55 mph. Your policy document sets out its own definition. We don’t decide whether a storm met that test. We record the damage and what seems to have caused it. Each area of damage is photographed, and the report is yours to pass on. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We survey slate and tile slopes, ridges and hips and gutters and fascias, and people most often book us about damaged pots on the stack and holes or cracks caused by debris.

In older homes around places like South Park, the underlay may be old bitumen felt, or there may be none at all. Once the slates or tiles let water past, there is little to stop it reaching the ceiling. Whether it is long-term wear or recent damage makes a difference to what happens next. In the loft, damp battens or wet insulation are frequently the first clues.

After the visit, you get a written report with photos, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

What we do, step by step

When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you’d like to know. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely. The survey usually takes about one to two hours at a typical home, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. In a smaller place like South Park, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from the ground and the loft can go ahead in most weather.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Getting ready for the survey

Advice

Honest limits

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • Negotiating a claim settlement
  • Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up
  • A price for the repairs

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you before you book. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Flashings
  • Flat roofs
  • Ridges and hips
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Chimney stacks
  • Slate and tile slopes

Landlords, agents and block managers in South Park

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when you book and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, from shops and offices to industrial units. Larger roofs take longer, and they’re priced for the size.

What we’re asked to look at in South Park

Some people book because a claim has been questioned. You get an independent record of what the roof shows. We cannot say whether the decision will change.

A survey can pick up problems like:

  • Damaged flat roof membrane
  • Roofs hit by falling trees
  • Ridge tiles that have come loose
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone

Anyone responsible for a site like Sandcross Primary School will know that tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • What happens after the report arrives
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • Are they insured for the work?

South Park questions

Do you cover smaller places like South Park?

Yes, South Park is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.

Do you cover South Park?

Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and South Park is part of that. Just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know about the property.

Do you look in the roof space?

If there is a loft and safe access to it, yes. The loft space can show things the outside cannot, such as damp timbers, staining or daylight.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Yes, where it’s applicable. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

What do I do if water is coming in?

Emergency cover over a damaged roof should be arranged with a roofer. If it’s safe, photograph the damage before it’s covered. Keep receipts in case your insurer asks for them.

How should I record storm damage myself?

Only from ground level or from windows. Don’t use a ladder or go onto the roof. With binoculars, you can see a lot from the ground, and we’ll record the rest.

Why get it checked now?

Knowing whether older wear played a part helps you understand your position. Our report gives an honest view of both, so there are no surprises later. In a smaller place like South Park, wherever a roof is exposed, a loose ridge or flashing doesn’t stay loose for long. Each storm lifts it a little further, and water follows.

What affects the cost of storm damage roof reports

Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before you book. These are the things that affect it:

  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • The shape of the roof and its details

A Basic Survey starts from £150, with VAT included. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400. We confirm the price for your survey before booking.

What we need to know

To price your survey accurately, we will ask about:

  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • The property’s address and postcode

Our phone lines are open seven days a week. For a price or to book, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Wind, rain and roofs in South Park

Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls are typical of Surrey’s older houses. Some old buildings in Surrey and Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so check with the council.

Take an older house close to St Luke's: the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near The Belfry, a quick answer on where water is coming in keeps a business running.
