Common questions in Albury

Do you cover Albury?

Yes, Albury is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Albury as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Albury?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Yes, where it applies and safe. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.

What happens after the survey?

You’ll get the report by email. With Standard there is a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs such as sagging are noted, but we do not provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.

Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?

It can show heat loss and some damp, but it has more limits there. We explain what the images can and cannot tell you, and back them up with a visual inspection and moisture readings.

How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?

It records surface temperature across the roof. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, which we then check with moisture readings.

How a thermal roof survey works in Albury

What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. It is useful to have a sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air. Rain, wind and cloud can all make the patterns weaker. We will discuss the weather with you when booking, and the report explains how the conditions on the day affected the results. We survey ceilings below the roof, flat roofs and loft conversions, and people most often book us about water getting in at parapets and stacks and cold spots on ceilings under the roof.

Villages like Albury frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

The report is written in plain words, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photo where possible.

Roof by roof

GRP fibreglass roofs

Glossy GRP can reflect heat. We take that into account and check findings with moisture readings.

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Problems where roof slopes and walls meet are often hidden. A careful visual inspection goes alongside the images.

What a thermal roof survey looks like in Albury

Historic houses such as Chilworth Manor, about 1.5 miles west, show how far back building in the area around Albury goes. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters. Older houses across Surrey often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging. A few of Surrey’s oldest buildings have heavy Horsham stone slab roofs. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up aerial photos and thermal images help.

Albury is about 4 miles south-east of Guildford, in Surrey. Bookings from Albury are handled just like any other: get in touch, agree the price and pick a day. Across Surrey, we cover Albury.

We also cover Albury Heath (1 mile south-east), Little London (1 mile south-east), Shere (1 mile east), Gomshall (2 miles east) and East Clandon (2 miles north). We also work in nearby towns such as Guildford (4 miles north-west), Woking (7 miles north-west), Camberley (13 miles north-west), Epsom (13 miles north-east), Horley (14 miles east) and Redhill (14 miles east).

What we are asked to look at in Albury

On big commercial and residential flat roofs, thermal imaging helps owners plan. Patterns can point to wet areas and show which parts look sound, so moisture readings can be targeted.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Moisture around outlets and upstands
  • Patches of heat loss across the roof
  • Gaps in loft insulation
  • Ceilings that feel colder in places

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Peter and St Paul, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Whether the loft is part of the inspection
  • Their insurance cover
  • What they won’t be able to tell you
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA

What to expect from a roof survey

Tips from our surveys

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
  • Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive
  • Note where damp appears and after what weather
  • Check from ground level or a window, never by climbing

If you are buying, the report gives you specific points to raise with the seller or agent. It’s your decision how to use it, whether you ask for work before completion or discuss the price.

After repairs or a new covering, a later survey can confirm things are dry, when the conditions are suitable.

What this survey can’t tell you

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:

  • The condition of timbers we can’t see
  • Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
  • Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you before you book. What a survey covers and does not.

What this survey covers

  • Flat roofs
  • Ceilings below the roof

  • Insulated roof spaces

How the survey works

A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. It normally takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Around Albury, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
  4. Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent
