Thermal roof surveys around Buttsole

The coast is about 5 miles or less from Buttsole, and wind off the sea can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Historic houses like Goodnestone Park, about 3.5 miles west, show how far back building in the area around Buttsole goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

For site and facilities teams at buildings like Eastry Church of England Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. The streets around a church like Church of St Mary the Virgin are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Buttsole

Thermal imaging can also show where a roof is losing heat. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves frequently show up as temperature differences. The difference shows most clearly when it’s warm inside and cold outside. The report shows the images and explains what they may mean. It is not an energy rating or a heat loss calculation. We survey insulated roof spaces, ceilings below the roof and commercial roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are gaps in loft insulation and cold spots on ceilings under the roof.

In a village or hamlet like Buttsole, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are looked at before the visit, and the journey is planned beforehand. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

How it works

After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a photo-illustrated written report, sent to you by email. As for time on site, most surveys take an hour or two at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Buttsole often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen.

  1. We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
  3. A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
  4. Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
  5. You get a report with thermal images, photographs and our recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Check pets are kept safely away

Booking a survey

How the survey changes by roof type

GRP fibreglass roofs

Glossy GRP can reflect heat. We allow for reflections and confirm findings with moisture readings.

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

These coverings sit directly on the layers beneath, so temperature differences frequently show through. We confirm any patterns with moisture readings.

Can I check my roof myself?

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Share it with us as you book, as it helps us focus the survey.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Buttsole questions

Will you come out to Buttsole?

Yes, Buttsole is covered. We survey roofs across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Buttsole?

Yes, Buttsole is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Buttsole as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?

Thermal imaging shows temperature rather than water. Wet insulation holds heat longer than dry, so it can stand out, and moisture readings are used to check it.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

It depends on what we need to see. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in; we will agree the details as you book.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Where it’s applicable and safe, yes. We fly a sub-250g drone and we are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. Visible signs like deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. The report will say if you need an engineer.

Tips that help

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:

  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Check from the ground or a window, never by climbing
  • Talk to us about the weather when booking
  • Do not switch the heating off ahead of the visit

Once we have been, the thermal images, photos and readings go into a single report. Each image is explained in plain words, alongside what we recommend. With a Premium Survey, you get the report the same day.

Make sure loft insulation covers the whole area and hasn’t been disturbed. Gaps frequently appear after work in the loft.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Repeated repairs that don’t stop a leak are a sign the source hasn’t been traced. Combining the camera with moisture readings can help find it, instead of trying repair after repair. Around Buttsole, older homes often have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.

A Basic Survey starts from £150, with VAT included. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. You will know the exact price before booking.

  • How big the roof is
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
