Thermal roof surveys for Puckeridge homes and businesses

The survey, step by step

We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. A visit to Puckeridge is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed in advance. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
  3. A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
  4. Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

About our thermal roof survey in Puckeridge

Thermal imaging works best in the right conditions. A sunny day before the survey, a dry roof surface and little wind all help. Rain, wind and cloud can all make the patterns weaker. We talk through the forecast as you book, and the report explains how the conditions on the day affected the results. Typical surveys look at leaks that are hard to trace and gaps in loft insulation, across flat roofs, ceilings below the roof and commercial roofs.

Around Puckeridge, older homes can have thin loft insulation and later additions with roofs of their own. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Results depend on the weather, so the visit is planned around the forecast.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, sent by email. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

What we cannot see

Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:

  • Proving moisture from the images alone
  • Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Commercial roofs
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Flat roofs
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Loft conversions

Prices for thermal roof surveys in Puckeridge

What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. That comes down to:

  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • How big the roof is
  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey

We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Booking your survey

If you can, have these to hand when you get in touch:

  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them

Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To find a date that works for you, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

FAQs for Puckeridge

Is Puckeridge within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Is my home in Puckeridge listed or in a conservation area?

We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

How long will you be at the property?

Most surveys take about 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. We’ll confirm the timing when you book.

Does someone need to be in?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We will talk about access as you book.

Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?

It can show heat loss and some damp, but it has more limits there. We explain what the images can and can’t tell you, and back them up with a visual inspection and moisture readings.

What conditions are best for thermal imaging?

The weather makes a real difference. A sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air all help. Rain, wind and heavy cloud can weaken the patterns, so we talk through the forecast as you book.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We fly a sub-250g drone and we are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in.

Tips from our surveys

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:

  • Don’t climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
  • Keep a record of when stains appear

If the images suggest moisture that can’t be confirmed, we will say what would help next, for example electronic leak detection or a roofer opening up a small section.

Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Catching a leak early stops insulation getting soaked.

Thermal roof surveys around Puckeridge

In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

Historic houses such as Much Hadham Palace, about 3.3 miles south-east, show how far back building around Puckeridge goes. Photos from the air and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. Anyone responsible for a site like Roger De Clare First CofE School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Church of St Mary, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Heat lost through a roof costs money every winter. Thermal images can show where insulation is missing or has slipped, so improvements can go where they’re needed. Around Puckeridge, a leak in an older house can soak into timbers and plaster, which is far harder to put right than the roof fault itself.

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.
