Questions from Weald
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Weald?
Normally it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Weald is about 3 miles from RAF Brize Norton, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather, though the rest of the survey goes ahead either way.
Is my home in Weald listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Will the survey show heat loss through my roof?
It can show temperature patterns that point to missing or thin insulation. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.
What does the report include?
A report with photos, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations, by urgency where it matters. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.
Will I get photos?
Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.
How fast do I get the report?
That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.
How a thermal roof survey works in Weald
We present each thermal image next to a normal photo of the same area, so it is easy to see which part of the roof each one shows. Each one comes with an explanation, the moisture readings and our recommendation. Premium reports are sent the same day. You can talk the findings through with us at the in-person consultation. A follow-up 12 months later is included too. If you’re worried about water that travels before it shows and wet areas near outlets and upstands, we can find out what’s behind it.
In a small place like Weald, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

How the survey works
Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photographs. As for time on site, most surveys take an hour or two at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Weald often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.
Before we arrive
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Let us know about parking before the day

What a survey costs
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:
- How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Prices start from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Thermal roof surveys in Weald: local notes
RAF Brize Norton is about 3 miles from Weald. If your survey includes the drone, the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions first. Kelmscott Manor, about 4.2 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Weald. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs.
If you look after a building such as Bampton CofE Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. Take an older house close to Church of St Mary: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
Weald is about 4 miles south-east of Carterton, in Oxfordshire. We provide thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Weald. Weald is one of the places in Oxfordshire where we work for thermal roof surveys. For surveys nearby, see our Oxford page.

Tips from our surveys
A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:
- Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
- Keep the report to compare against after any repair
- Check from the ground or a window, never by climbing
- Let us know where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
The report explains the conditions on the day and how they affected the images. It helps you judge how firm each finding is.
Have small defects in the covering fixed early. Water that gets under a covering can spread a long way before it shows.
How the survey changes by roof type
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Built-up felt and asphalt roofs can hide trapped water for a long time. Thermal imaging helps suggest where it is, given suitable conditions on the day.
Pitched slate and tile roofs
From inside the loft, the camera can help with damp around chimneys, valleys and roof windows. Findings are checked with moisture readings.
What you can safely check yourself
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date.
Why it’s worth a survey now in Weald
A damp patch that keeps coming back usually has a cause that hasn’t been found. Combining the camera with moisture readings can help find it, instead of trying repair after repair. In a small place like Weald, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.
One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, including VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
