What we look for on each type of roof

Ridges and hips

Wind lifts loose ridge and hip tiles. Spotting them early stops them falling.

Chimney stacks

Leaning stacks and loose pots are easier to judge from above. Each defect is photographed for the report.

Drone roof survey in East Finchley

Drone roof surveys are available in East Finchley and throughout London and South East England, where the airspace and the weather allow. Flights take place on weekdays and at weekends. We check the airspace for your address before booking a flight. You get a written report with close-up photographs and recommendations. To ask whether a drone survey suits your roof, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email. We survey chimney stacks, large and complex roofs and tall and steep roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are blistered or cracked flat roof coverings and slipped or missing slates on a high roof.

London airspace is busy and tightly controlled: there are flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every address in East Finchley is checked before any drone flight, and where permission is needed, the flight waits for it.

Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

  • Whether it is a home or a commercial building
  • Height and safe access

What to let us know when you contact us

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Anything about access we should know
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Where the property is, with the postcode

Once you know what you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us. We will suggest a package, agree the price and find a date.

How the survey works

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe vantage point, take photographs as we go and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take between one and two hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. In East Finchley, as in much of London, a good many properties are flats or terraces without side access, so the back of the roof is often seen from upstairs windows, from inside or, where a flight is allowed, from the air. If the building has a managing agent or access rules, tell us when booking.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

Advice

East Finchley questions

How do I find out if my home in East Finchley is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Can parking be tricky for a visit in East Finchley?

Sometimes, yes. Where there are permit zones, a visitor permit or nearby pay-and-display bay works well, and a driveway is even better.

What do I do with the report?

The report comes by email, and you decide the next step: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.

Do drone rules differ in central London?

Parts of central London are restricted, including areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs, and flights there need NATS permission. We check the airspace for your address and apply where needed.

Does your drone take thermal images?

No, the drone survey is photographic. For thermal imaging, look at the Premium Survey or our thermal roof survey.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we are not structural engineers and do not carry out calculations. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.

What does the report include?

It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, with photographs throughout. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely.

For landlords and managing agents

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords. Bigger roofs take more time, so they’re priced to suit.

Landlords and agents in East Finchley book surveys as well as householders. A report with photographs gives you a clear record of the roof, useful for planning maintenance.

Drone roof surveys around East Finchley

In outer London, interwar semis with hipped, tiled roofs sit alongside older slate-roofed terraces. Hips, bay roofs and later loft conversions are typical of those semis, if your home is one of them. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

The streets around a church such as Church of the Holy Trinity are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. For a London address like East Finchley, it helps to know about controlled parking before the day, along with any off-street space. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Holy Trinity CofE Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Practical tips

Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:

  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps
  • Allow time for permission if you’re in a flight restriction zone
  • Shut pets inside while we fly

Keep the photos with your property records. They give you something to compare against later, and they help if you sell.

Every so frequently, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside frequently shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.

DIY checks: what’s safe

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
