Gidea Park: your questions answered

Can parking be tricky for a visit in Gidea Park?

Sometimes, yes. If Gidea Park has controlled parking where you are, a visitor permit is the easiest answer.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Gidea Park?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Can you fly a drone near an airport?

It depends on the airspace at your address. Inside a flight restriction zone, we need permission first. Allow a little extra time if your home is close to an airport.

Can you fly a drone in central London?

It depends where in central London. Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas that need NATS permission. Every address is checked first, and fall back on other viewpoints if we cannot fly.

What if it is windy or raining on the day?

Bad weather means no flight. Wind and heavy rain are the two things that ground a small drone, so we’d move the date with you, or look from other safe viewpoints if you’d rather.

Will the drone show what’s under the tiles?

No. The drone sees the roof from outside only. For the underside, we check the loft where it can be reached safely, as damp and daylight often show there first.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so we need permission from whoever owns or manages the building. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.

Drone roof survey in Gidea Park: what you get

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. Safety comes first on every visit. If you are worried about flashings that have come away and storm damage on steep or tall roofs, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on large and complex roofs, chimney stacks and fragile roofs alike.

London’s roofs are often hard to see from the street: valley gutters behind parapets, dormers and flat-roofed rear additions. That’s where a view from the air or a thermal camera helps, by showing what can’t be reached safely. The weather decides the day: both drones and thermal cameras need the right conditions. What a thermal image shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.

Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that’s said too.

Can I check my roof myself?

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Gidea Park

With Hare Hall about 0.6 miles south-east, Gidea Park sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

The streets around a church like St Michael and All Angels Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps. As a London address, Gidea Park can be tricky for parking: let us know about permits, visitor bays or off-street space when you book. If you run a business near The Mercury Mall, large commercial roofs are often easiest to see from the air or with a thermal camera.

How the survey changes by roof type

Large commercial roofs

Many commercial roofs have fragile sheets or roof lights. With a drone, nobody has to go near them.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Some older terraces have a butterfly roof with a valley in the middle. It’s almost impossible to see from the ground, but a drone shows it clearly.

For landlords and managing agents

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work.

Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too. Bigger roofs take more time.

What happens on the day

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes an hour or two for a house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. If you have questions on the day, just ask. London terraces rarely offer a view of the whole roof from one spot, so a visit in Gidea Park moves between viewpoints: the pavement, upstairs windows, the loft and any safe spot at the back. Shared stairs or a basement flat? Tell us who holds the keys.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. We also look inside the loft space where it’s safe.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Advice

Before and after the survey

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:

  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps
  • Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to talk through the photos and findings. It is a chance to ask about anything in the report.

Look at the roof from the ground after strong winds. Debris in the garden is a sign to act on. A drone can show exactly what has moved.

What we cannot see

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:

  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • A flight on a day when the weather is not safe
