Useful tips for Hindhead property owners

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:

  • Allow time for permission if you’re in a flight restriction zone
  • Make sure the loft can be reached
  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps

File the report and photos with your home documents. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys.

Look at the roof from the ground after strong winds. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone survey can show what has shifted.

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Hindhead

We fly a sub-250g drone, and we are a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. Safety comes first on every visit. If you are worried about loose ridge and hip tiles and moss building up on slopes and in gutters, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

Older buildings in small places like Hindhead may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Photos from a drone survey show how the roof looks today. Next time, you can compare and see what has moved or worn. It is useful for planning maintenance over the years. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

Hindhead questions

Do you cover smaller places like Hindhead?

Yes. Hindhead is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Are there drone restrictions around Hindhead?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.

When does the report arrive?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed.

What will the report tell me?

It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, with photos throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we’re not structural engineers and do not carry out calculations. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Mention it when you get in touch and we’ll plan the survey around it.

What happens after the survey?

The report arrives by email, with photos and clear recommendations. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.

What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover

To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission
  • A flight on a day when the weather is not safe
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What this survey covers

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

What a drone roof survey looks like in Hindhead

Older houses across Surrey often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging. A few of Surrey’s oldest buildings have heavy Horsham stone slab roofs. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as St Edmund's School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Take an older house close to Church of St Luke: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Hindhead

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords. Larger roofs take longer, so they’re priced to suit.

Landlords, agents and building managers in Hindhead and across Surrey can book any of our surveys. To discuss a property or a block, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

How the survey works

The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the loft space if there is safe access. In total, it takes about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Rural addresses near Hindhead can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Before the survey

  • Let us know about parking near the property
  • Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent

Should I look at the roof myself first?

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in.
