Your questions about drone roof surveys in The Hyde
Is my home in The Hyde listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in The Hyde?
Typically it’s manageable with a little notice. Let us know the parking rules on your street and we will work around them.
What do I do with the report?
You’ll get the report by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Do you cover The Hyde for drone roof surveys?
Yes. The Hyde is part of the area we cover, and the service is the same as everywhere else we work.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Let us know your preferred days when booking.
Are you registered with the CAA?
Yes. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. Our drone weighs under 250g and follow the drone code.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
How a drone roof survey works in The Hyde
Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and within the 120-metre limit that applies to all drones in the open category. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. We never fly where it is not safe. We are frequently asked to look into eroded pointing on a chimney stack and worn lead at chimneys and walls, across large and complex roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and tall and steep roofs.
Flying in London takes more checking than most places: restriction zones surround Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas of their own. Every address in The Hyde is checked before any drone flight, and permission is never taken for granted.
It is not only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

When to book a survey in The Hyde
Big commercial and industrial roofs cover a lot of ground. A drone can photograph a large roof methodically, showing patterns of wear that are hard to spot up close. That gives a clearer picture of the roof as a whole.
It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Outlets choked with leaves and silt
- Chimney tops in poor condition
- Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
- Ridge and hip pieces working loose
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as The Hyde School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

What we do, step by step
The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. It typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. In The Hyde, as in much of London, lots of properties are flats or terraces without side access, so rear slopes are viewed from windows, the loft or, where a flight is allowed, by drone. If the building has a managing agent or access rules, let us know when you book.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
- If the loft can be reached safely, it is checked too.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
Preparing for the visit
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

Flying and imaging in The Hyde
Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.
Shop and office owners around Brent Cross Shopping Centre may find that thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof. With Heath House about 3.2 miles south-east, the area around The Hyde has a long history. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof itself.

Tips that help
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- Allow for a change of day in poor weather
- A word with neighbours beforehand helps
- Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
- Let us know what you want to see
File the report and photos with your home documents. They give you something to compare against later.
Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.
Checking the roof from ground level
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
